Cultivating Sustainable and Healthy Cities: A Systematic Literature Review of the Outcomes of Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture

TL;DR: In this paper , a systematic literature review examines the geographical landscape of the peer-reviewed literature on peri-urban agriculture and assesses its reported outcomes on sustainability and wellbeing, and identifies six thematic outcomes of UPA under three sustainability pillars -environment sustainability, material well-being, labour and livelihoods; land tenure and urban planning; and food and nutritional security as part of economic sustainability.
Journal ArticleDOI

Transforming the Use of Agricultural Premises under Urbanization Pressures: A Story from a Second-Tier Post-Socialist City

TL;DR: In this article , a case study of the regeneration of the area of a former Cistercian monastery in Brno that was traditionally used for agricultural purposes, but recently was redeveloped for a university campus is presented.

Agricultural space function transitions in rapidly urbanizing areas and their impacts on habitat quality: An urban–Rural gradient study

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors constructed a holistic framework oriented by four main agricultural space functions, including production, living, ecological and landscape culture functions, to map transition characteristics of agricultural space function combinations in the main urban area of Hangzhou, a typically rapidly urbanizing area in China, from 2000 to 2019 under the urban-rural gradient.

Spatial distribution of lead concentration in peri-urban soil: Threshold and interaction effects of environmental variables

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors investigated the threshold and interaction effects and obtained the spatial distribution of Pb content via gradient boosting decision tree in Wuhan City, China, where soil health was threatened by agricultural production and urbanization and industrialization process.
Journal ArticleDOI

Protected Natural Spaces, Agrarian Specialization and the Survival of Rural Territories: The Cases of Sierra Nevada (Spain) and Alta Murgia (Italy)

TL;DR: In this article , the authors compare two national parks: the Sierra Nevada National and Natural Park in Andalusia, Spain, and the Alta Murgia National Park in Apulia, Italy, in order to identify any similarities and/or differences between them.

The value of the world's ecosystem services and natural capital

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors have estimated the current economic value of 17 ecosystem services for 16 biomes, based on published studies and a few original calculations, for the entire biosphere, the value (most of which is outside the market) is estimated to be in the range of US$16-54 trillion (10^(12)) per year, with an average of US $33 trillion per year.

Solutions for a cultivated planet

TL;DR: It is shown that tremendous progress could be made by halting agricultural expansion, closing ‘yield gaps’ on underperforming lands, increasing cropping efficiency, shifting diets and reducing waste, which could double food production while greatly reducing the environmental impacts of agriculture.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ecosystem services and agriculture: tradeoffs and synergies.

TL;DR: The tradeoffs that may occur between provisioning services and other ecosystem services and disservices should be evaluated in terms of spatial scale, temporal scale and reversibility, and the potential for ‘win–win’ scenarios increases.
