Inference for lidar-assisted estimation of forest growing stock volume
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared estimates of mean forest growing stock volume per unit area obtained using probability-based and model-based estimators, and concluded that the logistic regression model exhibited no serious lack of fit to the data; estimators enhanced using maps produced greater precision than estimates based on only the plot observations; and third, modelbased synthetic estimators benefit from sample sizes for larger areas when applied to smaller subsets of the larger areas.
Journal ArticleDOI
Large-area mapping of Canadian boreal forest cover, height, biomass and other structural attributes using Landsat composites and lidar plots
Giona Matasci,Txomin Hermosilla,Michael A. Wulder,Joanne C. White,Nicholas C. Coops,Geordie W. Hobart,Harold S. J. Zald +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a predictive modeling approach to map forest structural attributes over the ~552 million-ha boreal forest of Canada using Lidar plots and a nearest neighbor imputation approach based on the Random Forest framework.
Journal ArticleDOI
A nationwide forest attribute map of Sweden predicted using airborne laser scanning data and field data from the National Forest Inventory
Mats Nilsson,Karin Nordkvist,Jonas Jonzén,Nils Lindgren,Peder Axensten,Jörgen Wallerman,Mikael Egberth,Svante Larsson,Lise-Lott Nilsson,Johan Eriksson,Håkan Olsson +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, a high resolution national raster database with forest variables was produced by combining the airborne laser scanning (ALS) data with field data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI) to create linear regression models relating selected forest variables, or transformations of the variables, to metrics derived from the ALS data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Forest restitution and protected area effectiveness in post-socialist Romania
Jan Knorn,Tobias Kuemmerle,Volker C. Radeloff,Alina Szabo,Marcel Mîndrescu,William S. Keeton,Ioan Vasile Abrudan,Patrick Griffiths,Vladimir Gancz,Patrick Hostert +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess the effectiveness of Romanian protected areas at stemming unsanctioned logging, and assess post-socialist logging in their surrounding landscapes, during a time of massive socioeconomic and institutional change.
Journal ArticleDOI
Contribution of large-scale forest inventories to biodiversity assessment and monitoring
TL;DR: A review on the role of forest inventories in biodiversity assessment and monitoring is presented in this paper, where the authors highlight the types of forest biodiversity indicators that can be estimated from data collected in the framework of standard forest inventory and the implications of different sampling methods on the estimation of the indicators, and outline current possibilities for harmonized estimation of biodiversity indicators in Europe from National Forest Inventory data.
