TLDR
The authors proposed two nearly identical models for the origin of near-axis and superswell chains, assuming that both regions are underlain by significant quantities of more or less uniformly distributed partial melt.

Pacific absolute plate motion since 145 Ma: An assessment of the fixed hot spot hypothesis

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the geometry and ages from 12 Pacific seamount chains to determine two new absolute plate motion models with covariance estimates back to 145 Ma, and found that only a small group of age samples had to be discarded on the grounds that they were discordant with the dominant trends.

Short-lived and discontinuous intraplate volcanism in the South Pacific: Hot spots or extensional volcanism?

TL;DR: This paper used 40 Ar/39 Ar seamount ages and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic signatures to map out Cretaceous volcanism in the West Pacific Seamount Province (WPSP) and to characterize its evolution with respect to the currently active hot spots in the SOPITA region.
Journal ArticleDOI

Global distribution of seamounts inferred from gridded Geosat/ERS‐1 altimetry

TL;DR: In this paper, a forward modeling approach based on an axisymmetric Gaussian seamount is used to characterize the global seamount distribution by locating circular maxima in the gridded vertical gravity gradient field derived from altimetry collected by the Geosat and ERS-1 satellite missions.
Journal ArticleDOI

The North–South Paleozoic to Quaternary trend of alkaline magmatism from Niger–Nigeria to Cameroon: Complex interaction between hotspots and Precambrian faults

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that although there is a general age decrease from one province to another, there is no age migration in any given province, except in the Nigeria province (Younger Granites) where a rough NE-SW age decrease is observed.

Theory of plates and shells

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the bending of long RECTANGULAR PLATES to a cycloidal surface, and the resulting deformation of shels without bending the plates.

Spectral Methods in Fluid Dynamics

TL;DR: Spectral methods have been widely used in simulation of stability, transition, and turbulence as discussed by the authors, and their applications to both compressible and incompressible flows, to viscous as well as inviscid flows, and also to chemically reacting flows are surveyed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Spectral Methods in Fluid Dynamics.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a set of methods for the estimation of two-dimensional fluid flow, including a Fourier Galerkin method and a Chebyshev Collocation method.
Journal ArticleDOI

Current plate motions

TL;DR: A global plate motion model, named NUVEL-1, which describes current plate motions between 12 rigid plates is described, with special attention given to the method, data, and assumptions used as discussed by the authors.

Current plate motions

TL;DR: In this paper, a new global model (NUVEL-1) was proposed to describe the geologically current motion between 12 assumed-rigid plates by inverting plate motion data.
