Nutritional Status of Elderly Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients and Its Influencing Factors

TLDR
There is a high prevalence rate of malnutrition in elderly MHD patients and low protein intake, inadequate hemodialysis and diabetes mellitus may enhance malnutrition of elderly M HD patients.
Abstract
Objective To understand the nutritional status of elderly maintenance hemodialysis(MHD) patients, and to study its influencing factors. Methods One hundred and twenty five elderly MHD patients were tested with Subjective Global Assessment(SGA) to assess their nutritional status, and their related factors were collected including clinical characteristics, biochemical parameters, dietary data. The influencing factors of malnutrition were analyzed. Results It was found that 48.8% of elderly MHD patients were malnutritional. The multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that low protein intake(P=0.013),inadequate hemodialysis(P=0.011),and diabetes mellitus(P=0.046) were risk factors for malnutrition of elderly MHD patients. Conclusion There is a high prevalence rate of malnutrition in elderly MHD patients.Low protein intake, inadequate hemodialysis and diabetes mellitus may enhance malnutrition of elderly MHD patients.
