On territorial behavior and other factors influencing habitat distribution in birds
TLDR
In this article, the Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability and a sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density, consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in males of this species limits their density.Abstract:
This example is provided so that non-theorists may see actual applications of the theory previously described. The Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability. A sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density. This is consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in the males of this species limits their density. This study provides a valid example of how the problem can be approached and offers a first step in the eventual identification of the role of territorial behavior in the habitat distribution of a common species.read more

Synthesizing mechanisms of density dependence in reef fishes: behavior, habitat configuration, and observational scale
J. Wilson White,Jameal F. Samhouri,Adrian C. Stier,Clare L. Wormald,Scott L. Hamilton,Stuart A. Sandin +5 more
TL;DR: A synthetic framework to predict expected mortality patterns for reef fish populations, reconciling some apparent contradictions in the recent reef fish literature and suggesting the importance of accounting for the scale-sensitive details of predator and prey behavior in any study system is suggested.

A dynamic model for the ideal-free distribution as a partial differential equation.
TL;DR: The goal of this paper is to formulate a class of models based on partial differential equations whose equilibria are solutions to a version of the ideal-free distribution set in continuous space that can be compared with or incorporated into other sorts of dynamic models such as reaction-diffusion systems.

Density‐dependent effects on productivity in the Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus: the role of interference and habitat heterogeneity
TL;DR: The increase in the regional density of Griffon Vultures produced a decrease in the productivity at both optimal and suboptimal nest sites, which suggests that density-dependent regulation of breeding success operates through interference and that all the individuals in a colony are similarly affected.

Nonintuitive cue use in habitat selection

TL;DR: A simple model illustrates the conditions that favor indirect cue use, even when those cues are produced by factors with negative effects on fitness, and illustrates the application of these ideas to problems in basic and applied ecology.

Animal dispersion in relation to social behaviour
TL;DR: Wynne-Edwards has written this interesting and important book as a sequel to his earlier (1962) Animal Dispersion in Relation to Social Behaviour, and reviewing it has proven to be a valuable task for one who normally is only at the periphery of the group selection controversy.
