On territorial behavior and other factors influencing habitat distribution in birds
TLDR
In this article, the Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability and a sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density, consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in males of this species limits their density.Abstract:
This example is provided so that non-theorists may see actual applications of the theory previously described. The Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability. A sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density. This is consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in the males of this species limits their density. This study provides a valid example of how the problem can be approached and offers a first step in the eventual identification of the role of territorial behavior in the habitat distribution of a common species.read more

Habitat Selection and Niche Conservatism

TL;DR: This paper relaxes a key assumption in prior literature, by allowing habitat selection decisions to be conditional upon an individual’s phenotype, and uses individual-based simulations of evolution in source–sink landscapes to examine the consequences of phenotype-matching habitat selection.

What is a winter floater? causes, consequences, and implications for habitat selection
David R. Brown,Jennifer A. Long +1 more
TL;DR: Evidence of the causes, consequences, and frequency of winter floating behavior, focusing primarily on migrant songbirds, is reviewed and the adrenocortical response to social stress plays a key role in both the proximate and ultimate causes of floating behavior.

Landscape-scale patterns of black-throated sparrow (amphispiza bilineata) abundance and nest success
TL;DR: The Black-throated Sparrow in the northern Chihuahuan Desert is used as a model to test patterns of abundance and nest success across a landscape and how habitat selection theory suggests mechanisms for the observed patterns is discussed.

Spacing of leks in relation to female home ranges, habitat requirements and male attractiveness in the great snipe (Gallinago media)
TL;DR: Data on female home ranges, distance between leks and male site fidelity in the great snipe were obtained and support the attractiveness hypothesis because successful and dominant males return to the same lek and territory, both within and between years, whereas unsuccessful males move to other leks.

Animal dispersion in relation to social behaviour
TL;DR: Wynne-Edwards has written this interesting and important book as a sequel to his earlier (1962) Animal Dispersion in Relation to Social Behaviour, and reviewing it has proven to be a valuable task for one who normally is only at the periphery of the group selection controversy.
