On territorial behavior and other factors influencing habitat distribution in birds
TLDR
In this article, the Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability and a sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density, consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in males of this species limits their density.Abstract:
This example is provided so that non-theorists may see actual applications of the theory previously described. The Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability. A sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density. This is consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in the males of this species limits their density. This study provides a valid example of how the problem can be approached and offers a first step in the eventual identification of the role of territorial behavior in the habitat distribution of a common species.read more

Predator Avoidance and Community Structure: Interactions among Piscivores, Planktivores, and Plankton
TL;DR: Calculation of bluegill feeding rates shows that the fish exerted substantial mortality on the zooplankton and that cladocerans experienced lower per capita death rates in the presence of bass, which is in light of current theory predicting how foragers should deplete prey among habitats that differ in mortality risk.

Trade-offs between foraging and predation risk determine habitat use in a desert baboon population
TL;DR: Deviations from these patterns by a unimale group indicate that male reproductive strategies may also play a role in habitat selection, and supports hypothesis 4.

Practical guidance on characterizing availability in resource selection functions under a use–availability design
TL;DR: This work examined the influence of availability on statistical inference through simulations and analysis of serially correlated mule deer GPS data, finding bias in estimates arose from incorrectly assessing and sampling the spatial extent of availability.

When to use public information for breeding habitat selection? The role of environmental predictability and density dependence
TL;DR: A two-patch, game-theoretical model is built to compare the success of a strategy of breeding habitat selection based on patch reproductive success relative to four other strategies, showing how the efficiency of strategies in tracking variations in patch quality depend on environmental predictability and costs linked to density dependence, themselves linked to the dynamics of spatial aggregation of individuals.

Animal dispersion in relation to social behaviour
TL;DR: Wynne-Edwards has written this interesting and important book as a sequel to his earlier (1962) Animal Dispersion in Relation to Social Behaviour, and reviewing it has proven to be a valuable task for one who normally is only at the periphery of the group selection controversy.
