On territorial behavior and other factors influencing habitat distribution in birds
TLDR
In this article, the Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability and a sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density, consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in males of this species limits their density.Abstract:
This example is provided so that non-theorists may see actual applications of the theory previously described. The Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability. A sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density. This is consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in the males of this species limits their density. This study provides a valid example of how the problem can be approached and offers a first step in the eventual identification of the role of territorial behavior in the habitat distribution of a common species.read more

Coevolution of Patch Selection Strategies of Predator and Prey and the Consequences for Ecological Stability
M. van Baalen,Maurice W. Sabelis +1 more
TL;DR: This article shows that the combination of both evolutionary and ecological stability criteria not only allows one to test whether ecological theories are compatible with the theory of natural selection but may also lead to new insights, such as why low-quality patches may constitute a partial refuge for the prey.

An assessment of the acoustic survey technique, RoxAnn, as a means of mapping seabed habitat
Simon P. R. Greenstreet,I. D. Tuck,Gavin N. Grewar,Eric Armstrong,David G. Reid,Peter J. Wright +5 more
TL;DR: RoxAnn acoustic surveys of the inner Moray Firth, undertaken in September/October 1995 and January 1996, were used to map seabed habitat on the basis of two sediment characteristics, "roughness" (E1) and "hardness", (E2). The traditional analytical method of fitting a box pattern to E1 vs. E2 scatter plots was compared with a more objective method using False Colour Composite Image (FCCI) and cluster analysis as discussed by the authors.

TL;DR: It is argued that while inequality may be produced by a variety of localized processes, its evolution is fundamentally dependent on the economic defensibility and transmissibility of wealth.

TL;DR: The size-related assortment of individuals upon the two habitats was interpreted as the outcome of competitive interactions and the lower reproductive success in the less preferred habitat are in accordance with Fretwell's ideal despotic distribution model.

Animal dispersion in relation to social behaviour
TL;DR: Wynne-Edwards has written this interesting and important book as a sequel to his earlier (1962) Animal Dispersion in Relation to Social Behaviour, and reviewing it has proven to be a valuable task for one who normally is only at the periphery of the group selection controversy.
