On territorial behavior and other factors influencing habitat distribution in birds
TLDR
In this article, the Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability and a sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density, consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in males of this species limits their density.Abstract:
This example is provided so that non-theorists may see actual applications of the theory previously described. The Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability. A sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density. This is consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in the males of this species limits their density. This study provides a valid example of how the problem can be approached and offers a first step in the eventual identification of the role of territorial behavior in the habitat distribution of a common species.read more

The past and the present in decision-making: the use of conspecific and heterospecific cues in nest site selection
Sami M. Kivelä,Janne-Tuomas Seppänen,Otso Ovaskainen,Blandine Doligez,Lars Gustafsson,Mikko Mönkkönen,Jukka T. Forsman +6 more
TL;DR: This work analyzed nest site selection in the migratory Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis in relation to present and past cues provided by conspecifics and by resident tits within habitat patches by using long-term data to indicate social information use in nestSite selection at a small spatial scale.

On fitness and partial migration in a large herbivore – migratory moose have higher reproductive performance than residents

TL;DR: Examination of the effect of movement tactic on reproductive performance and survival of 82 GPS-marked female moose and their offspring in a partial migratory population in central Norway indicated higher growth in the migrating part of the population because migrating females produced more twins than resident females.

Post-breeding information gathering and breeding territory shifts in northern wheatears.
Debora Arlt,Tomas Pärt +1 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that even though site shifts are determined partly during the post-breeding period, post-Breeding movements of experienced breeders may be costly, especially when the breeding site is also a good foraging and moulting site in thePost-breeding season.

The impact of exotic trout on native charr in a Japanese stream
TL;DR: Regression and isodar methods developed by community ecologists provide tools for evaluating the existence and magnitude of interspecific interactions in the field and were able to evaluate the potential impact of exotic trout on native white-spotted charr.

Explaining variation in the effect of floral density on pollinator visitation.
TL;DR: This model assumes that pollinators distribute themselves between a focal patch of flowers and the surrounding environment so as to maximize foraging success and serves as a starting point for explaining an important facet of plant-pollinator mutualisms.

Animal dispersion in relation to social behaviour
TL;DR: Wynne-Edwards has written this interesting and important book as a sequel to his earlier (1962) Animal Dispersion in Relation to Social Behaviour, and reviewing it has proven to be a valuable task for one who normally is only at the periphery of the group selection controversy.
