On territorial behavior and other factors influencing habitat distribution in birds

TLDR
In this article, the Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability and a sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density, consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in males of this species limits their density.
Abstract
This example is provided so that non-theorists may see actual applications of the theory previously described. The Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability. A sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density. This is consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in the males of this species limits their density. This study provides a valid example of how the problem can be approached and offers a first step in the eventual identification of the role of territorial behavior in the habitat distribution of a common species.

Factors Influencing Habitat Selection in Fishes with a Review of Marsh Ecosystems

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the general theory regarding habitat selection in fishes and integrate this theory with recent data to evaluate habitat selection by marsh fishes and find that little information is currently available with which to evaluate potential mechanisms underlying patterns of habitat use in these systems.

The Breeding Biology of an Isolated Bobolink Population in Oregon

James F. Wittenberger
- 01 Dec 1978 -
TL;DR: The results provide some pertinent evidence for evaluating current mating system theory and suggest a new factor that may affect the timing of breeding events of the Bobolinks population at Malheur Refuge.

Evolutionary game theory

TL;DR: In this paper, a formal account of evolutionary game theory is presented, and applications to field and laboratory data are discussed by Maynard Smith (1979), where the assumption made about inheritance is the simplest possible one, that individuals produce offspring identical to themselves, i.e. parthenogenetic inheritance.

Biological characteristics of invaders among bird species in Britain

TL;DR: Among Western Palaearctic birds, range expansion is more commonly observed in families with low proportions of long-distance migrants than among generally migratory families as mentioned in this paper, and successful colonists lay more eggs each season, on average, than failed colonists.

The response of wild atlantic salmon parr to acute reductions in water flow

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the movement response of individual Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) to drought in near-natural mesocosms, and found that the optimal response of salmon parr to extreme natural drought and anthropogenic de-watering will, in many cases, be to move.

Animal dispersion in relation to social behaviour

TL;DR: Wynne-Edwards has written this interesting and important book as a sequel to his earlier (1962) Animal Dispersion in Relation to Social Behaviour, and reviewing it has proven to be a valuable task for one who normally is only at the periphery of the group selection controversy.
