On territorial behavior and other factors influencing habitat distribution in birds

TLDR
In this article, the Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability and a sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density, consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in males of this species limits their density.
Abstract
This example is provided so that non-theorists may see actual applications of the theory previously described. The Dickcissel sex ratio is employed as an indirect index of suitability. A sex ratio index was found to be correlated positively with density. This is consistent with the hypothesis that territorial behavior in the males of this species limits their density. This study provides a valid example of how the problem can be approached and offers a first step in the eventual identification of the role of territorial behavior in the habitat distribution of a common species.

Combined effects of inflorescence architecture, display size, plant density and empty flowers on bumble bee behaviour: experimental study with artificial inflorescences

TL;DR: It is suggested that display size and the spatial arrangement of flowers and nectar within inflorescences can contribute to efficient pollination by affecting pollinator behaviour interactively.

Running the gauntlet : a predator-prey game between sharks and two age classes of seals

TL;DR: Results suggest that pups may act as initiators in a behaviourally mediated indirect interaction with adult seals, mediated by the behaviour of their common shark predator; this would represent the first record of an intergenerational two-species indirect interaction.

Vocal behaviour and neighbour spatial arrangement during vocal displays in eagle owls (Bubo bubo)

TL;DR: Analyses of the characteristics of call posts showed that the choice of such focal points was guided by the trade-off between the need to defend the territory and within-pair communication inside the core areas, as well as efficient communication with neighbours.

How well do food distributions predict spatial distributions of shorebirds with different degrees of self-organization?

TL;DR: It is found that interference-insensitive species like red knot and dunlins are more clustered than predicted by the spatial distribution of their food resources, which suggests that these species follow each other when selecting foraging patches, and resource-based models have better predictive power for interference-sensitive species than for interfered species.

Marine fisheries as ecological experiments

TL;DR: To highlight the value of marine fisheries data, a review of leading ecological theories that have been empirically tested using such data is reviewed and two barriers to use of fisheries data to answer ecological questions are addressed.

Animal dispersion in relation to social behaviour

TL;DR: Wynne-Edwards has written this interesting and important book as a sequel to his earlier (1962) Animal Dispersion in Relation to Social Behaviour, and reviewing it has proven to be a valuable task for one who normally is only at the periphery of the group selection controversy.
