TLDR
In this article, it was shown that molecular ordering in the isotropic phase of MBBA can be induced by an intense laser field and the ordering relaxation time as a function of temperature.Abstract:
We have shown by measuring the field-induced refractive index that molecular ordering in the isotropic phase of $p$-methoxy benzylidene $p\ensuremath{-}n$-butylaniline (MBBA) can be induced by an intense laser field. We have also measured directly the ordering relaxation time as a function of temperature. The results are compared with the predictions of the Landau---de Gennes model.read more

Photomodulation of liquid crystal orientations for photonic applications
TL;DR: Two types of photomodulation of orientations of liquid crystals (LCs) are reviewed: 1) order-disorder phase transitions induced by photochemical reactions of photochromic molecules and 2) orderorder alignment change of LCs (change in LC directors) induced by photoochemical reactions or without photochemical events.

Orientational Optical Nonlinearity of Liquid Crystals
TL;DR: In this article, the main part of laser investigations concerns with nonlinear optical phenomena, and the knowledge of laws governing the interaction of a powerful light with a medium is necessary for the correct utilization of laser beams.

Landau theory of the nematic-isotropic phase transition
TL;DR: A review of the wide variety of predictions that results from a Landau-type of description of the nematic-isotropic phase transition is given in this paper, which includes a discussion of the nature of the order parameter and of the various types of possible phases.

Optical-Field-Induced Birefringence and Freedericksz Transition in a Nematic Liquid Crystal
TL;DR: In this paper, the optical field induced Freedericksz transition was observed for the first time in nematic 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl.
