Organizational information requirements, media richness and structural design

TLDR
Models are proposed that show how organizations can be designed to meet the information needs of technology, interdepartmental relations, and the environment to both reduce uncertainty and resolve equivocality.
Abstract
This paper answers the question, "Why do organizations process information?" Uncertainty and equivocality are defined as two forces that influence information processing in organizations. Organization structure and internal systems determine both the amount and richness of information provided to managers. Models are proposed that show how organizations can be designed to meet the information needs of technology, interdepartmental relations, and the environment. One implication for managers is that a major problem is lack of clarity, not lack of data. The models indicate how organizations can be designed to provide information mechanisms to both reduce uncertainty and resolve equivocality.

A Study of the Relationship between Student Social Networks and Sense of Community.

TL;DR: Qualitative analyses indicate that an individual's pre-existing external social network influences the type of support and information exchanges an individual requires and therefore, the degree of sense of community ultimately experienced.

8. Information processing in traditional, hybrid, and virtual teams: From nascent knowledge to transactive memory

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors place virtual teams in context and provide a two dimensional framework for understanding the range of virtualness, including diversity, psychological safety, social identity, conflict, and transactive memory.

A Systematic Review of Theory Use in Software Engineering Experiments

TL;DR: It is found that theory use and awareness of theoretical issues are present, but that theory-driven research is, as yet, not a major issue in empirical software engineering.

Computer-Mediated Communication and Majority Influence

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined whether and how computer mediated communication (CMC) can reduce majority influence and thereby enhance the quality of decisions in some situations, and showed that the impact of CMC on majority influence was contingent upon national culture.

The State of Network Organization: A Survey in Three Frameworks

TL;DR: The proposed benefits are a clarification of what it means for an organization to be network structured, a few insights into its origins, and a suggestion of where the boundaries to some of its different forms might lie.

The External Control of Organizations: A Resource Dependence Perspective

TL;DR: The External Control of Organizations as discussed by the authors explores how external constraints affect organizations and provides insights for designing and managing organizations to mitigate these constraints, and it is the fact of the organization's dependence on the environment that makes the external constraint and control of organizational behavior both possible and almost inevitable.

A Behavioral Theory of the Firm

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an overview of basic concepts in the Behavioral Theory of the Firm, and present a specific price and output model for a specific type of products. But they do not discuss the relationship between the two concepts.
