TLDR
It is concluded that when injected into a living cell, the 9 s RNA is fairly stable and has the properties of a haemoglobin messenger.

Journal ArticleDOI

An efficient mRNA-dependent translation system from reticulocyte lysates.

TL;DR: A simple method is described for converting a standard rabbit reticulocyte cell-free extract (lysate) into an mRNA-dependent protein synthesis system, and no residual nuclease activity could be detected, and the tRNA is functionally unimpaired.
Journal ArticleDOI

Efficient Translation of Tobacco Mosaic Virus RNA and Rabbit Globin 9S RNA in a Cell-Free System from Commercial Wheat Germ

TL;DR: The in vitro product directed by globin 9S RNA comigrated precisely with authentic rabbit globin on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels during high voltage ionophoresis, and two [(35)S]methionine-labeled tryptic peptides synthesized in vitro comigrated in two dimensions with alphaT5 and betaT5 tryptic amino-acid incorporation from authentic [( 35)S].
Journal ArticleDOI

The use of Xenopus oocytes for the study of ion channels.

TL;DR: Oocytes of the African frog Xenopus laevis have been exploited for the study of numerous aspects of ion channel function and regulation, such as the properties of several endogenous voltage-dependent channels and the involvement of second messengers in mediation of neurotransmitter-evoked membrane responses.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ovalbumin messenger ribonucleic acid translation. Comparable rates of polypeptide initiation and elongation on ovalbumin and globin messenger ribonucleic acid in a rabbit reticulocyte lysate.

TL;DR: It is suggested that protein synthesis stops in this system due to a failure of polypeptide initiation, and the efficiency of messenger RNA translation was estimated by two independent methods, which indicate that each globin messenger RNA was translated about 70 times during a 90-min incubation.

Estimation of the molecular weights of proteins by Sephadex gel-filtration.

P Andrews
- 01 May 1964 -
TL;DR: The results are similar to those of previous studies, where the objective was to establish a cause-and-effect relationship, rather than a straightforward relationship between the number of cells and the content of the molecule.
Journal ArticleDOI

Peptides obtained by tryptic hydrolysis of performic acid-oxidized ribonuclease.

TL;DR: In the present study, the chemical structure of ribonuclease has been investigated by the use of trypsin as a reagent for the hydrolysis of specific peptide bonds in the oxidized protein, and the resulting peptides have been separated and analyzed by ion exchange chromatography.
Journal ArticleDOI

The synthesis of mouse hemoglobin chains in a rabbit reticulocyte cell-free system programmed with mouse reticulocyte 9S RNA

TL;DR: The 9S RNA fraction of mouse reticulocyte polysomes has been purified and shown to direct the synthesis of mouse hemoglobin β- chains in a mammalian cell-free system under the direction of a mRNA isolated from a different mammalian species.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hemoglobin synthesis during amphibian metamorphosis: I. Chemical studies on the hemoglobins from the larval and adult stages of Rana catesbeiana

TL;DR: Characterization of the peptide chains of the major and of one other component showed each to have two types of chain, none of which is in common, in the hemoglobins of Rana catesbeiana tadpoles.
Journal ArticleDOI

Synthesis of a mouse immunoglobulin light chain in a rabbit reticulocyte cell-free system.

TL;DR: An RNA fraction isolated from a mouse myeloma functions as template for the synthesis of a mouse Ig light chain in a cell free system from rabbit reticulocytes.
