Radiation-Induced Cardiovascular Disease
TLDR
There remains little guidance regarding screening and therapies to prevent cardiovascular events in cancer survivors who have undergone mediastinal and neck radiation, manifesting many years after completion of therapy.Abstract:
Purpose of review
Thoracic radiation therapy is an effective treatment for several malignancies, such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma and breast cancer. Over the years, however, the incidence of cardiovascular events has increased in these patients, notably in younger survivors who do not have traditional risk factors. This review summarizes the pathology, incidence, clinical presentation, and management of cardiac events after radiation therapy.read more

Radiation-Induced Cardiovascular Toxicity: Mechanisms, Prevention, and Treatment.
TL;DR: Radiation therapy (RT)-driven CV toxicity remains a major issue for cancer survivors and more research is needed to define the precise mechanisms of toxicity, however, recent findings provide meaningful insights that may help improve patient outcomes.

TL;DR: There is an urgent need for further research on the impact of low-dose radiation on circulatory and metabolic diseases in clinical, occupational or environmental exposure situations, addressing epidemiological, biological, risk modelling, and systems biology aspects and highlighting the gaps in knowledge.

TL;DR: Advances in external-beam radiation delivery techniques and how these techniques affect the expected thoracic radiation-induced changes are described, and how to distinguish these expected changes from complications such as infection and radiation- induced malignancy is distinguished.

Risk of Ischemic Heart Disease in Women After Radiotherapy for Breast Cancer
Sarah C. Darby,Marianne Ewertz,Paul McGale,Anna M. Bennet,Ulla Blom-Goldman,Dorthe Scavenius Brønnum,C Correa,David J. Cutter,Giovanna Gagliardi,Bruna Gigante,Maj-Britt Jensen,Andrew Nisbet,Richard Peto,Kazem Rahimi,Carolyn W. Taylor,Per Hall +15 more
TL;DR: Exposure of the heart to ionizing radiation during radiotherapy for breast cancer increases the subsequent rate of ischemic heart disease, and the increase is proportional to the mean dose to the heart, begins within a few years after exposure, and continues for at least 20 years.

Studies of Mortality of Atomic Bomb Survivors. Report 13: Solid Cancer and Noncancer Disease Mortality: 1950–1997
TL;DR: While excess rates for radiation-related cancers increase throughout the study period, a new finding is that relative risks decline with increasing attained age, as well as being highest for those exposed as children as noted previously.

TL;DR: Survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer are at substantial risk for cardiovascular disease, and healthcare professionals must be aware of these risks when caring for this growing population.

Constrictive Pericarditis in the Modern Era Evolving Clinical Spectrum and Impact on Outcome After Pericardiectomy
Lieng H. Ling,Jae K. Oh,Hartzell V. Schaff,Gordon K. Danielson,Douglas W. Mahoney,James B. Seward,A. Jamil Tajik +6 more
TL;DR: The evolving profile of CP, with increasingly older patients and those with radiation-induced disease in the past decade, significantly affects postoperative prognosis, and long-term results of pericardiectomy are disappointing for some patient groups, especially those with Radiation-induced CP.
