Abstract
Building on her seminal contribution to social theory in Culture and Agency, in this 1995 book Margaret Archer develops her morphogenetic approach, applying it to the problem of structure and agency. Since structure and agency constitute different levels of stratified social reality, each possesses distinctive emergent properties which are real and causally efficacious but irreducible to one another. The problem, therefore, is shown to be how to link the two rather than conflate them, as has been common theoretical practice. Realist Social Theory: The Morphogenetic Approach not only rejects methodological individualism and holism, but argues that the debate between them has been replaced by a new one, between elisionary theorising and emergentist theories based on a realist ontology of the social world. The morphogenetic approach is the sociological complement of transcendental realism, and together they provide a basis for non-conflationary theorizing which is also of direct utility to the practising social analyst.

A Dynamic Theory of Expertise and Occupational Boundaries in New Technology Implementation: Building on Barley's Study of CT Scanning

TL;DR: A theory to explain why the implementation of new technologies often disrupts occupational roles in ways that delay the expected benefits is developed and a balance of expertise across occupational boundaries in operating the technology creates a pattern in which the benefits of the new technology are likely to be realized most rapidly.

What You Can—and Can’t—Do With Three-Wave Panel Data:

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that fixed-effects models are extremely sensitive to the correct specification of temporal lags, and a simulation and a proof are provided to show that the use of incorrect lags in FE models can lead to coefficients that are the opposite sign of the true parameter values.

Institutional transformation in Uzbekistan's agricultural and water resources administration: The creation of a new bureaucracy

TL;DR: Yalcin and Mollinga as discussed by the authors analyzed the institutional transformation of the Uzbek agriculture and water resources administration after Uzbekistan gained independence in 1991 and suggested that the merger of the two ministries in 1997 came about as a result of a broader process of organizational change that was part of the post-Soviet state-building process.
