Abstract
It is a privilege to be able to contribute to this volume in which Professor Zervas’ friends, students, and colleagues have joined together to honor him and his remarkable contributions to peptide chemistry. Although I did not know him until after his days in the Bergmann Laboratory at the Rockefeller Institute, I can claim the distinction of now working in those very same rooms that they occupied back in the mid-1930s. Like all peptide chemists, I am greatly indebted to Professor Zervas, having depended so heavily on the carbobenzoxy group and on the various modified urethan protecting groups which have been direct extensions of the revolutionary advance that Bergmann and Zervas made.

Adding New Chemistries to the Genetic Code

TL;DR: The development of new orthogonal aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase/tRNA pairs has led to the addition of approximately 70 unnatural amino acids to the genetic codes of Escherichia coli, yeast, and mammalian cells, which provide new opportunities to generate proteins with enhanced or novel properties and probes of protein structure and function.
Journal ArticleDOI

Solid phase synthesis

TL;DR: The purpose today is to describe the chemical synthesis of peptides and proteins and to discuss the use of the synthetic approach to answer various biological questions.

Surface expression of alpha 4 integrin by CD4 T cells is required for their entry into brain parenchyma.

TL;DR: It is concluded that surface expression of alpha 4 integrin is important in CD4 T cell entry into brain parenchyma and may be crucial in allowing activated effector T cells to leave blood and enter the brain and other tissues to clear infections.

A priori delineation of a peptide which mimics a discontinuous antigenic determinant

TL;DR: A technique was developed for identifying peptides with high affinity for a given antibody by testing a monoclonal antibody directed against a discontinuous antigenic determinant on foot-and-mouth disease virus, and peptides mimicking the determinant were identified even though the tertiary structure of the proteins comprising the virus capsid is unknown.

Measurement of Fibrinopeptide A in Human Blood

TL;DR: A radioimmunoassay for FPA is developed and the application of this assay to the measurement of FPA levels in clinical blood samples showed evidence that the immunoreactivity measured in plasma is due to FPA, and that extracts of streptokinasetreated plasma showed a five-fold increase in activity when treated with thrombin and markedly different immunore activity with the two antisera.

Disc electrophoresis – ii method and application to human serum proteins*

TL;DR: The technique of disc electrophoresis has been presented, including a discussion of the technical variables with special reference to the separation of protein fractions of normal human serum.

Disc electrophoresis-i background and theory*

TL;DR: Some mechanisms that provide a rationale for the resolution afforded by zone electrophoresis in many gels will be detailed; the theory of some new modifications of zone electophoresis that have been designed to take maximum advantage of these mechanisms will be developed.

Sequence-selective recognition of DNA by strand displacement with a thymine-substituted polyamide

TL;DR: The results show that the backbone of DNA can be replaced by a polyamide, with the resulting oligomer retaining base-specific hybridization.
