In this article, energy release rates for cracks propagating in media with spatially varying elastic moduli, this variation being in a direction perpendicular to the crack growth direction, are derived for transient problems of semi-infinite cracks in infinite media for certain special forms of the variation in shear modulus.
Abstract
Energy release rates are calculated for cracks propagating in media with spatially varying elastic moduli, this variation being in a direction perpendicular to the crack growth direction. Results are given for transient problems of semi-infinite cracks in infinite media for certain special forms of the variation in shear modulus. Steady state crack propagation in a displacement loaded strip is also considered and it is shown by the use of a certain path independent integral that a simple formula for the energy release rate can be obtained for quite general variations in clastic moduli provided these variations are in a direction perpendicular to the crack. Other path independent integrals are derived which may be of use for transient crack tip stress analysis in strips in a similar way to that used in [4] for the homogeneous elastic problem.

On stress singularities and interfaces in linear elastic fracture mechanics

TL;DR: In this paper, the model of an interface between two different elastic media can be changed in order to remove the logical inconsistencies present in analyses of the ideal interface currently in use, and the models, suggested in the paper, could also be interpreted as descriptions of actual diffuse interfaces formed by an adhesive layer.

Dynamic response of a crack in a functionally graded material between two dissimilar half planes under anti-plane shear impact load

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical and numerical treatment of a finite crack subjected to an anti-plane shear impact load in a media with spatially varying elastic properties is provided, where the elastic properties of the interfacial layer are assumed to vary continuously between that of two dissimilar homogeneous bonding layers.

Effects of material gradients on transient dynamic mode-III stress intensity factors in a FGM

TL;DR: In this article, a transient dynamic crack analysis for a functionally graded material (FGM) by using a hypersingular time-domain boundary integral equation method is presented, where the spatial variations of the material parameters of the FGM are described by an exponential law.

Theoretical aspects of fracture mechanics

TL;DR: In this paper, the dominant singular near crack tip stress field can often be parametrised in terms of three parameters K1, KII and KIII designating three fracture modes each having an angular variation entirely specified for the stress tensor and displacement vector.

The motion of a brittle crack

TL;DR: In this paper, the acceleration phase and subsequent motion of a brittle crack of finite length extending in an infinite sheet loaded in the extensional mode are determined, and the energy release is assumed to depend on crack length and on crack-tip velocity but not on higher time-derivatives of crack length.

A transient crack problem for an infinite strip under antiplane shear

TL;DR: In this article, the authors considered the problem of a semi-infinite crack suddenly arising in a loaded strip of finite width and then propagating with a constant velocity, where the analysis was carried out within the realm of the classical theory of elasticity and a state of antiplane shear is assumed.
