The Tetragonal-Monoclinic Transformation in Zirconia: Lessons Learned and Future Trends
TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that many of these attractive features of zirconia, especially fracture toughness and strength, are compromised after prolonged exposure to water vapor at intermediate temperatures (∼30°-300°C).
Journal ArticleDOI
Low temperature degradation -aging- of zirconia: A critical review of the relevant aspects in dentistry.
Vanni Lughi,Valter Sergo +1 more
TL;DR: A critical survey of all experimental data about the low temperature degradation of zirconia due to the tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation shows that the main factors affecting the aging phenomenon are the stabilizer type and content, the residual stress and the grain size.
Journal ArticleDOI
Current status of zirconia restoration.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that highly polished zirconia yielded lower antagonist wear compared with porcelains, and combined application of silica coating and/or silane coupler, and 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate is currently one of the most reliable bonding systems for zirConia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Novel Zirconia Materials in Dentistry
Yu Zhang,Brian R. Lawn +1 more
TL;DR: The progressive development of currently available and next-generation zirconias is reviewed, representing a concerted drive toward greater translucency while preserving adequate strength and toughness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Unstable cracking (chipping) of veneering porcelain on all-ceramic dental crowns and fixed partial dentures.
TL;DR: The central argument of this study is that residual stresses developed during the preparation of all-ceramic crowns and fixed partial dentures coupled with contact-induced cracking are the origin of the excessive chipping observed in clinical applications.

The efficacy of posterior three-unit zirconium-oxide-based ceramic fixed partial dental prostheses: a prospective clinical pilot study.
Ariel J. Raigrodski,Gerard Jules Chiche,Narong Potiket,J.L. Hochstedler,Shawky E. Mohamed,Susan Billiot,Donald E. Mercante +6 more
TL;DR: Zirconia-based posterior 3-unit FPDPs performed well after short-term service and were rated Bravo in terms of marginal integrity at 36 months and Alpha in all measured parameters.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phase change and mechanical properties of ZrO2-Y2O3 solid electrolyte after ageing
TL;DR: In this paper, the crystal structure, mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and performance as solid electrolyte were investigated before and after ageing at low temperature for the system ZrO 2 Y 2 O 3 containing from 4.5 to 6.0 mole% Y 2 O3.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stability of Tetragonal ZrO2 Particles in Ceramic Matrices
TL;DR: In this paper, the stability of tetragonal ZrO2 particles in ceramic matrices was considered, with particular reference to Al2O3-ZrO 2 composites and to partially stabilized TZRO 2.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of sandblasting on the long-term performance of dental ceramics.
TL;DR: Strengths of sandblasted specimens show significant reductions in both dynamic and cyclic tests, indicative of larger starting flaws, however, the shift is considerably greater in the cyclic data, suggesting some mechanically assisted growth of the sandblast flaws.

Transformation toughening of ceramics
TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide a coherent and up-to-date discussion of the scientific work concerning the transformation toughening of ceramics and provide a useful reference for scientists, engineers and students who are new to these materials.
