TLDR
In this article, statistical tests permitting the detection of outliers in groups of X-ray intensity measurements are described, which may also be useful for rejecting the outlying counts automatically rather than discard complete sets of measurements.
Abstract
When used to determine the concentrations of chemical elements in samples, X-ray intensity measurements are processed by correction programmes. These measurements are now usually obtained with fully or partially automated instruments. In order to suppress useless computations on sets of results containing rogue values, statistical tests must first be applied to the original experimental data. From an economic standpoint, it may also be worthwhile to reject the outlying counts automatically rather than discard complete sets of measurements. Statistical tests permitting the detection of outliers in groups of results are described.

Development of texture and microstructure during cold-rolling and annealing of F.C.C. alloys: Example of an austenitic stainless steel

TL;DR: In this paper, the main brass-type components of the rolling texture are retained, despite classical discontinuous recrystallization and grain growth, and possible solid solution effects (Mo) are invoked to explain this behaviour.

Natural iodine in a clay formation: Implications for iodine fate in geological disposals

TL;DR: In this article, the ubiquitous presence of iodide at 1 −5 ǫ kg −1 level in the Callovian-Oxfordian (COx) clayy formation was confirmed at a value in the range of ∼20 −40 m −1, i.e. higher than the expected range of radio-iodine concentration in the far field of the storage.

Characterization of plutonium distribution in MIMAS MOX by image analysis

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the development of X-ray microanalysis techniques to produce semi-quantitative "maps" of plutonium concentrations in order to rapidly characterize large areas of the fuel microstructure with reasonable accuracy.

Electron microprobe determination of minor and trace transition elements in silicate minerals: A method and its application to mineral zoning in the peridotite nodule PHN 1611

TL;DR: A WDS analytical technique for the determination by electron microprobe of low concentrations of the transition elements Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co and Ni in ferro-magnesian silicate minerals is presented in this paper.

Electron microprobe dating of monazite substantiates ages of major geological events in the southern Brazilian shield

TL;DR: In this paper, the ages of two Trans-Amazonian metamorphic events are given by a felsic, garnet-bearing granulite from the Santa Maria Chico granulitic complex.

Procedures for Detecting Outlying Observations in Samples

TL;DR: In this paper, a procedure for determining statistically whether the highest observation, lowest observation, highest and lowest observations, or more of the observations in the sample are statistical outliers is given.

Sample Criteria for Testing Outlying Observations

TL;DR: In this article, the significance of the largest observation in a sample of size $n$ from a normal population was investigated and the authors proposed a new statistic, S^2_n/S^2, to test whether the two largest observations are too large.

Processing Data for Outliers

Wilfrid J. Dixon
- 01 Mar 1953 -
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discussed the problem of whether certain observations properly belong in the presentation of measurements obtained by an experimenter and suggested that a consideration of this sort is more properly made at the recording stage or perhaps at the stage of preliminary processing.

Extension of Sample Sizes and Percentage Points for Significance Tests of Outlying Observations

TL;DR: In this article, the probability of a significance test conrerning the highest or lowest observation in normal samples was extended to larger sample sizes than heretofore published and to probability levels of.005 and.001.

Ratios Involving Extreme Values

TL;DR: In this article, order statistics are used to analyze the distribution of order statistics for small values of n = 3, \cdots, 30 and for small samples of size n \leqq 30.
