TLDR
In this paper, the effects of three retinoid compounds (retinol, all-trans retinoic acid (tretinoin), and 13-cis retinoisotretin) with respect to effects on central nervous system malformations and postnatal death, growth reduction, and behavioral dysfunction were investigated.

Chiral Toxicology: It's the Same Thing…Only Different

TL;DR: Chiral substances possess a unique architecture such that, despite sharing identical molecular formulas, atom-to-atom linkages, and bonding distances, they cannot be superimposed as discussed by the authors.

REVIEW Chiral Toxicology: It's the Same Thing ... Only Different

TL;DR: Environmental toxicology provides several examples in which compound bioaccumulation, persistence, and toxicity show chiral dependence, and chiral analysis has been applied to illicit drug preparations and biological specimens, with the potential to assist in determination of cause of death and aid in the correct interpretation of substance abuse and "doping" screens.

Human pluripotent stem cell-derived neural constructs for predicting neural toxicity

TL;DR: Stem cell biology, tissue engineering, bioinformatics, and machine learning were combined to implement an in vitro human cellular model for developmental neurotoxicity screening and demonstrated the value of human cell-based assays for predictive toxicology and should be useful for both drug and chemical safety assessment.

Complex regulation of cyp26a1 creates a robust retinoic acid gradient in the zebrafish embryo.

TL;DR: Using cell transplantation and implantation of RA-coated beads into RA-deficient zebrafish embryos, it is demonstrated that RA can directly convey graded positional information over long distances, and expression of Cyp26a1, the major RA-degrading enzyme during gastrulation, is under complex feedback and feedforward control.

13-cis-retinoic acid suppresses hippocampal cell division and hippocampal-dependent learning in mice

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a clinical dose of 13-cis-RA in mice significantly reduces cell proliferation in the hippocampus and the subventricular zone, suppresses hippocampal neurogenesis, and severely disrupts capacity to learn a spatial radial maze task.

Retinoic Acid Embryopathy

TL;DR: It is possible that a major mechanism of isotretinoin teratogenesis is a deleterious effect on cephalic neural-crest cell activity that results in the observed craniofacial, cardiac, and thymic malformations.

Retinoic acid causes an anteroposterior transformation in the developing central nervous system.

TL;DR: It is found that RA acts on the developing CNS, transforming anterior neural tissue to a posterior neural specification, raising the possibility that RA mediates an inductive interaction regulating anteroposterior differentiation within the CNS.

Morphogenesis of malformations in hamsters caused by retinoic acid: relation to dose and stage at treatment.

TL;DR: Female golden hamsters were each given a single administration of retinoic acid sodium salt at one of 20 stages in pregnancy, and forty types of malformation whose incidence was 10% or more at the fetal LD50 dose at some time in pregnancy were studied.
