Synthesis and X-ray Crystal Structure of a Triple-Stranded Helical Supramolecular Complex Formed between Tris(3-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrazole)ruthenium(II) and Copper(I).

TLDR
The X-ray crystal structure and 1H NMR and electronic spectroscopic properties of {[Ru(py-pz)3]2Cu3}(ClO4) are reported.
Abstract
Reaction between [Ru(py-pzH)3](ClO4)2 (where py-pzH = 3-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrazole) and Cu(II) or Cu(I) in methanol, in the presence of excess NEt3, affords the triple-strand helical supramolecular {[Ru(py-pz)3]2Cu3}(ClO4). The X-ray crystal structure and 1H NMR and electronic spectroscopic properties of {[Ru(py-pz)3]2Cu3}(ClO4) are reported.

Self-recognition in helicate self-assembly: spontaneous formation of helical metal complexes from mixtures of ligands and metal ions.

TL;DR: The results point to a change in paradigm from pure compounds to instructed mixtures--that is from seeking chemical purity to designing programmed systems composed of mixtures of instructed components capable of spontaneously forming well--defined superstructures through self-processes.
