TLDR
In this article, the phenomenological theory of martensitic transformations is applied to the various observed transformation modes in the shape memory alloy nickel-titanium and it is shown that one of the observed twinning modes can be identified as a type II mode, with the shear direction η 1 being derived from a cell edge of the parent B2 phase.

Journal ArticleDOI

Recent developments in the research of shape memory alloys

TL;DR: Most of shape memory alloys are functional intermetallics as discussed by the authors, and they are now practically being used for couplings, actuators, medical guide wires etc., and are hopeful candidates for smart materials, which already exist.

Asymmetry of stress–strain curves under tension and compression for NiTi shape memory alloys

TL;DR: In this paper, the deformation mechanism of polycrystalline martensitic NiTi shape memory alloys under tension and compression was investigated and it was shown that under compression, the material is quickly strain hardened and no flat stress-plateau is observed.
Journal ArticleDOI

The TiNi shape-memory alloy and its applications for MEMS

TL;DR: The shape-memory effect is a solid state phenomenon which exploits a reversible phase transformation to repeatedly achieve an initial shape, even after some deformation of the material as discussed by the authors, and many metal alloys exhibit this effect.
Journal ArticleDOI

The shape memory mechanism associated with the martensitic transformation in TiNi alloys—I. Self-accommodation

TL;DR: In this paper, a trace analysis of the three sides (habit planes) of the triangles in TiNi single crystals was performed, and it was found that these three variants formed plate groups clustered about one of the {100}B2 poles.

Cubic to Orthorhombic Diffusionless Phase Change— Experimental and Theoretical Studies of AuCd

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical analysis of the cubic to orthorhombic transformation is presented which predicts for a partly transformed crystal, the interface plane, orientation relationships, and macroscopic distortions from a knowledge only of the lattice parameters of the initial and final phases.
