The effects of ACTH, adrenalectomy and dexamethasone on the acquisition of an avoidance response in rats.

TLDR
The action of ACTH on avoidance conditioning is clearly extra-adrenal, but ACTH is not essential to normal performance, at least when high levels of glucocorticoids are present.

Hormonal mediation of genetic differences in avoidance behavior

TL;DR: Long-Evans hooded rats were selectively bred for differences in avoidance behavior by using two behavioral criteria: limited responding to the warning signal during 10 pretest trials, and either good or poor performance during 60 trials of active avoidance training in a two-way shuttlebox.

ACTH 1-17 and short-term memory, anxiety, heart rate, blood pressure.

TL;DR: If confirmed by other studies, the short-term memory effect of ACTH 1–17 at 5 min after i.v. could suggest a central action of the peptide, and confirm the role of HPA axis as a modulator of performance and emotional arousal during acute environmental changes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Does ACTH mediate the punishment-intensification effect of prolonged, fixed-duration treatment shocks?

TL;DR: The theory that ACTH is a source of memory retrieval was consistent with this finding that punishment-facilitation effects of ST are (partly) mediated by cues associated with elevated pituitary-adrenal output, but the similar mediational effect of DEX cues was inconsistent with a more general internal-cue conditioning interpretation of ST effects.

Some Studies of the Protein-Binding of Steroids and Their Application to the Routine Micro and Ultramicro Measurement of Various Steroids in Body Fluids by Competitive Protein-Binding Radioassay

TL;DR: A 100-fold increase in sensitivity has now been achieved by using tritiated steroids in place of 14C-labeled steroids, by utilizing the CBG's of species other than man, and by using adsorption in Place of dialysis or gel filtration.

Long Term and Short Term Effects on Retention of a Conditioned Avoidance Response in Rats by Treatment with Long Acting Pitressin and α-MSH

D. de Wied, +1 more
- 24 Dec 1966 -
TL;DR: It is found that the rapid extinction of a CAR which occurs after posterior lobectomy or hypophysectomy can be prevented by treatment with ACTH, melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) or lysine vasopressin given during the extinction period.
Journal ArticleDOI

Inhibitory Effect of ACTH and Related Peptides on Extinction of Conditioned Avoidance Behavior in Rats

TL;DR: ACTH, administered during extinction, delays extinction of an avoidance response in rats and results were interpreted to indicate that the active part of ACTH in this respect is located in the N-terminal part of the molecule, presumably in the first 10 amino acids.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of anterior pituitary on avoidance learning and escape behavior.

TL;DR: Adenohypophysectomized rats were subjected to an avoidance learning procedure and only 6 of 21 rats achieved the conditioning criterion against 14 of 18 sham-operated controls.
