TLDR
It is shown that emotion expressions moderate the effect of generous strategies, increasing or reducing cooperation according to the intention communicated by the signal; in contrast, expressions by extortionists had no effect on participants’ behavior, revealing a limitation of highly competitive strategies.Abstract:
The iterated prisoner’s dilemma has been used to study human cooperation for decades. The recent discovery of extortion and generous strategies renewed interest on the role of strategy in shaping behavior in this dilemma. But what if players could perceive each other’s emotional expressions? Despite increasing evidence that emotion signals influence decision making, the effects of emotion in this dilemma have been mostly neglected. Here we show that emotion expressions moderate the effect of generous strategies, increasing or reducing cooperation according to the intention communicated by the signal; in contrast, expressions by extortionists had no effect on participants’ behavior, revealing a limitation of highly competitive strategies. We provide evidence that these effects are mediated mostly by inferences about other’s intentions made from strategy and emotion. These findings provide insight into the value, as well as the limits, of behavioral strategies and emotion signals for cooperation.read more

Reducing Cognitive Load and Improving Warfighter Problem Solving With Intelligent Virtual Assistants
TL;DR: An experiment where participants engaged in an augmented reality version of the relatively well-known desert survival task indicated that both assistant conditions led to higher performance over the no assistant condition, but the embodied assistant achieved this with less cognitive burden on the decision maker than the voice assistant, which is a novel contribution.

Emotion expressions shape human social norms and reputations
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a comprehensive experimental analysis of the interplay of emotion expressions with two important cooperation mechanisms: direct and indirect reciprocity, and show that cooperation in an iterated prisoner's dilemma emerges from the combination of the opponent's initial reputation, past behaviors, and emotion expressions.

Signalling boosts the evolution of cooperation in repeated group interactions
TL;DR: It is shown that signalling alone leads to higher levels of cooperation than when combined with reciprocity, while offering additional robustness against errors, and it may be easier to understand why direct reciprocity has been observed only in a limited number of cases among non-humans.

People’s dispositional cooperative tendencies towards robots are unaffected by robots’ negative emotional displays in prisoner’s dilemma games
Te-Yi Hsieh,Emily S. Cross +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors explored the impact of robots' emotional displays on people's tendency to cooperate with a robot opponent in prisoner's dilemma games and found that participants who accurately recognized the robots' sad and angry displays tended to cooperate less with them overall.

Theory of Games and Economic Behavior
TL;DR: Theory of games and economic behavior as mentioned in this paper is the classic work upon which modern-day game theory is based, and it has been widely used to analyze a host of real-world phenomena from arms races to optimal policy choices of presidential candidates, from vaccination policy to major league baseball salary negotiations.
