Microbial Surface Colonization and Biofilm Development in Marine Environments
Hongyue Dang,Charles R. Lovell +1 more
TL;DR: Recent progress in the study of marine microbial surface colonization and biofilm development is synthesized and discussed and questions are posed for targeted investigation of surface-specific community-level microbial features to advance understanding ofsurface-associated microbial community ecology and the biogeochemical functions of these communities.

Occurrence and abundance of 6-methyl branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers in soils : Implications for palaeoclimate reconstruction
Cindy De Jonge,Ellen C. Hopmans,Claudia Zell,Jung-Hyun Kim,Stefan Schouten,Jaap S. Sinninghe Damsté +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors quantified the fractional abundance of 6-methyl brGDGTs in globally distributed soils and showed that they are abundant components, comprising on average 24% of the total amount of brDGTs.

The effect of improved chromatography on GDGT-based palaeoproxies
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented a method based on two ultra-high performance liquid chromatography silica columns capable of separating a wide range of GDGTs with good resolution and which compares favorably with previously published methods.

Characterisation of membrane phospholipids and glycolipids from a halophilic archaebacterium by high‐performance liquid chromatography/electrospray mass spectrometry
TL;DR: Combined high-performance liquid chromatography and electrospray mass spectrometry (LC/ES-MS) has been used for direct characterisation of the polar membrane lipids in total lipid extracts from Halobacterium salinarium, a species of halophilic archaebacterium, providing a further example of the previously recognised existence of isoprenologues of diphytanyl archaeols which occur as minor components of Archaebacterial membrane lipIDS.

Preservation of microbial lipids in geothermal sinters.
TL;DR: Investigation of lipid preservation in active and inactive geothermal silica sinters from Champagne Pool, Waiotapu, New Zealand reveals a wide range of bacterial biomarkers, including free and bound fatty acids, 1,2-di-O-alkylglycerols (diethers), and various hopanoids, and indicates that incorporated lipids can be well preserved.

Reconstruction of the Archaeal Isoprenoid Ether Lipid Biosynthesis Pathway in Escherichia coli Through Digeranylgeranylglyceryl Phosphate
Denton Lai,Ben Lluncor,Imke Schröder,Robert P. Gunsalus,James C. Liao,Harold G. Monbouquette +5 more
TL;DR: This investigation established roles for four A. fulgidus genes in the isoprenoid ether lipid pathway for D GGGP biosynthesis and provides a platform useful for identification of subsequent, currently unknown, steps in tetraether lipid biosynthesis proceeding from DGGGP, which is the presumed substrate for the head-to-head coupling reaction yielding unsaturated caldarchaeol.
