The role of adaptive behavior in autism spectrum disorders: implications for functional outcome.

TLDR
The results indicate that IQ is a strong predictor of adaptive behavior, the gap betweenIQ and adaptive impairments decreases in lower functioning individuals with ASD, and older individuals have a greater gap between IQ and adaptive skills.
Abstract
The relationship between adaptive functioning and autism symptomatology was examined in 1,089 verbal youths with ASD examining results on Vineland-II, IQ, and measures of ASD severity. Strong positive relationships were found between Vineland subscales and IQ. Vineland Composite was negatively associated with age. IQ accounted a significant amount of the variance in overall adaptive skills (55%) beyond age and ASD severity. Individuals with ASD demonstrated significant adaptive deficits and negligible associations were found between the level of autism symptomatology and adaptive behavior. The results indicate that IQ is a strong predictor of adaptive behavior, the gap between IQ and adaptive impairments decreases in lower functioning individuals with ASD, and older individuals have a greater gap between IQ and adaptive skills.

Correlates of adaptive skills in children with autism spectrum disorder

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify potential modifiable factors prior to early intervention that are associated with better adaptive skills in children with autism spectrum disorder, and propose a cross-sectional study.

Teacher ratings of academic skills and academic enablers of children on the autism spectrum

TL;DR: This paper found that academic underachievement is commonly reported among students on the autism spectrum and little is known about the factors that predict academic performance of those on the spectrum, as measured on standardised assessments.

Growth mixture models of adaptive behavior in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

TL;DR: Growth mixture modeling was used to identify distinct classes of growth trajectories in communication, daily living skills, and socialization domains of adaptive behavior, and aspects of school quality predicted the likelihood of being in the moderately low classes above and beyond autism symptoms.

The impact of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder on adaptive functioning in children diagnosed late with autism spectrum disorder—A comparative analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the relationship between ASD, ADHD and adaptive behavior in children aged 7-17 years at the time of their first ASD diagnosis and found that 68.1% of the participants had a clinical diagnosis of ADHD in addition to ASD.
