The role of adaptive behavior in autism spectrum disorders: implications for functional outcome.

TLDR
The results indicate that IQ is a strong predictor of adaptive behavior, the gap betweenIQ and adaptive impairments decreases in lower functioning individuals with ASD, and older individuals have a greater gap between IQ and adaptive skills.
Abstract
The relationship between adaptive functioning and autism symptomatology was examined in 1,089 verbal youths with ASD examining results on Vineland-II, IQ, and measures of ASD severity. Strong positive relationships were found between Vineland subscales and IQ. Vineland Composite was negatively associated with age. IQ accounted a significant amount of the variance in overall adaptive skills (55%) beyond age and ASD severity. Individuals with ASD demonstrated significant adaptive deficits and negligible associations were found between the level of autism symptomatology and adaptive behavior. The results indicate that IQ is a strong predictor of adaptive behavior, the gap between IQ and adaptive impairments decreases in lower functioning individuals with ASD, and older individuals have a greater gap between IQ and adaptive skills.

Changes in Maladaptive Behaviors From Midchildhood to Young Adulthood in Autism Spectrum Disorder

TL;DR: Compared with youths without autism spectrum disorder, children with the disorder showed greater heterogeneity in trajectories for maladaptive behaviors, and behaviors related to hyperactivity showed the greatest improvement.

The Autism Impact Measure (AIM): Initial Development of a New Tool for Treatment Outcome Measurement

TL;DR: The development and psychometric properties of a new measure targeting sensitivity to change of core autism spectrum disorder symptoms, the Autism Impact Measure (AIM), are described and it is shown that the AIM is a reliable and valid measure of frequency and impact of core ASD symptoms.

Characterizing Psychiatric Comorbidity in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Receiving Publicly Funded Mental Health Services.

TL;DR: Patterns of psychiatric comorbidity in children with autism spectrum disorder who present to mental health services with challenging behaviors and child characteristics associated withComorbid conditions are described and direction for tailoring intervention is provided to address a broad range of clinical issues.

The Gap Between Adaptive Behavior and Intelligence in Autism Persists into Young Adulthood and is Linked to Psychiatric Co-morbidities

TL;DR: Findings emphasize key intervention targets of both adaptive skill and psychopathology for transition-age youth and young adults with ASD, as well as the need for ongoing monitoring of anxiety and depression symptoms during this developmental window.
