Two-Stage DEA: An Application to Major League Baseball
TLDR
In this article, the authors use DEA to model DMUs that produce in two stages, with output from the first stage becoming input to the second stage, and apply the model to Major League Baseball, demonstrating its advantages over a standard DEA model.Abstract:
We show how to use DEA to model DMUs that produce in two stages, with output from the first stage becoming input to the second stage. Our model allows for any orientation or scale assumption. We apply the model to Major League Baseball, demonstrating its advantages over a standard DEA model. Our model detects inefficiencies that standard DEA models miss, and it can allow for resource consumption that the standard DEA model counts towards inefficiency. Additionally, our model distinguishes inefficiency in the first stage from that in the second stage, allowing managers to target inefficient stages of the production process.read more

Efficiency of Iranian forest industry based on DEA models
TL;DR: In this paper, the efficiency of 14 Iranian forest companies and forest management units was investigated in 2010 by using a traditional DEA model and a two-stage DEA model, where traditional DEA models consider all DMU activities as a black box and ignore the intermediate products, while two stage models address intermediate processes.

Dynamic network DEA and SFA models for accounting and financial indicators with an analysis of super-efficiency in stochastic frontiers: An efficiency comparison in OECD banking
TL;DR: An assessment of 124 OECD banks during 2004–2013 in light of relevant accounting and financial indicators that reflect banking production process and performance reveals that results generated from the proposed models interact differently with the socio-economic and business-related variables.

Player salaries, organizational efficiency, and competitiveness in Major League Baseball.
TL;DR: The dramatic growth of free agency in Major League Baseball has caused great concern about the competitiveness of some teams, particularly those in smaller markets as mentioned in this paper, using a two-stage data set.

Measuring the efficiency of the Portuguese public hospitals: A value modelled network data envelopment analysis with simulation
TL;DR: In this article, a slacks-based model was designed to measure the efficiency of the Portuguese secondary healthcare providers bearing in mind their internal services, where the absence of data regarding the connections between those services called for the additional use of a simulation method modelled with the judgements of a decision-maker.

Are Sustainable Banks Efficient and Productive? A Data Envelopment Analysis and the Malmquist Productivity Index Analysis
TL;DR: In this article, a two-stage performance evaluation is employed with the integration of data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Malmquist productivity index (MPI) to evaluate sustainable bank performance and productivity for 9 years (2010-2018).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduce a frontier model for productivity measurement that explicitly recognizes that some inputs are produced and consumed within the production technology, where intermediate inputs may also be final output.

TL;DR: It is found that the decomposition of production into subproduction processes reduces the dimensions of problem specification, with the effect that a larger number of variables may be usefully included in the model.
