TLDR
In this article, the authors use DEA to model DMUs that produce in two stages, with output from the first stage becoming input to the second stage, and apply the model to Major League Baseball, demonstrating its advantages over a standard DEA model.Abstract:
We show how to use DEA to model DMUs that produce in two stages, with output from the first stage becoming input to the second stage. Our model allows for any orientation or scale assumption. We apply the model to Major League Baseball, demonstrating its advantages over a standard DEA model. Our model detects inefficiencies that standard DEA models miss, and it can allow for resource consumption that the standard DEA model counts towards inefficiency. Additionally, our model distinguishes inefficiency in the first stage from that in the second stage, allowing managers to target inefficient stages of the production process.read more

Review of efficiency ranking methods in data envelopment analysis
TL;DR: A review of the literature on the ranking of data envelopment analysis (DEA) in order to increase the discrimination power of this analytical technique can be found in this paper, where the authors classified DEA ranking methods into 10 categories based on their structure, and they include those approaches published up to 2016.

A network DEA assessment of team efficiency in the NBA
Plácido Moreno,Sebastián Lozano +1 more
TL;DR: A Network DEA approach to assess the efficiency of NBA teams is proposed and compared with a black-box DEA approach and shows that network DEA has more discriminating power and provides more insight than the conventional DEA approach.

Estimation of the efficiency of Japanese hospitals using a dynamic and network data envelopment analysis model
TL;DR: There are no positive policy effects despite the increased financial support from the central government in Japan’s municipal hospitals, and the first empirical application of the DN model in the healthcare field is performed.

Does generation form influence environmental efficiency performance? An analysis of China's power system
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors classify the 30 provincial administrative regions (PARs) in China into three categories according to the proportion of thermal power ratio and then use a two-stage environmental network DEA model to compare their efficiency performance.

Decomposition of technical and scale efficiencies in two-stage production systems
Chiang Kao,Shiuh-Nan Hwang +1 more
TL;DR: This paper extends the efficiency measurement to two-stage systems where each stage has one process and all the outputs from the first process become the inputs of the second.

Productivity and Intermediate Products: A Frontier Approach
Rolf Färe,Shawna Grosskopf +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduce a frontier model for productivity measurement that explicitly recognizes that some inputs are produced and consumed within the production technology, where intermediate inputs may also be final output.

An intermediate input model of dairy production using complex survey data
Rolf Färe,Gerald Whittaker +1 more
TL;DR: It is found that the decomposition of production into subproduction processes reduces the dimensions of problem specification, with the effect that a larger number of variables may be usefully included in the model.
