TLDR
In this article, the authors use data from a field experiment conducted by an online travel firm to examine whether dynamic retargeted ads are more effective than simply showing generic brand ads.Abstract:
Firms can now offer personalized recommendations to consumers who return to their website, using consumers' previous browsing history on that website. In addition, online advertising has greatly improved in its use of external browsing data to target Internet ads. Dynamic retargeting integrates these two advances by using information from the browsing history on the firm's website to improve advertising content on external websites. When surfing the Internet, consumers who previously viewed products on the firm's website are shown ads with images of those same products. To examine whether this is more effective than simply showing generic brand ads, the authors use data from a field experiment conducted by an online travel firm. Surprisingly, the data suggest that dynamic retargeted ads are, on average, less effective than their generic equivalents. However, when consumers exhibit browsing behavior that suggests their product preferences have evolved (e.g., visiting review websites), dynamic retargeted ad...read more

Web personalization

TL;DR: A conceptualization of interpolated web personalization to be tested as a potential complement to current (extrapolated) approaches is proposed and suggested as the primary area suitable for future research and building evidence for attaining business goals as a secondary topic.

Privacy Notices as Tabula Rasa: An Empirical Investigation into How Complying with a Privacy Notice is Related to Meeting Privacy Expectations Online
TL;DR: In this article, a factorial vignette study describing online consumer tracking asked respondents to rate the degree online scenarios met consumers' privacy expectations or complied with a privacy notice, and the results suggest respondents perceived the privacy notice as offering greater protections than the actual privacy notice.

The effect of big data on recommendation quality: The example of internet search
TL;DR: Evidence that the quality of search results improve with more data on previous searches is found, and the type of data matters as well: personalized information is particularly valuable as it massively increases the speed of learning.

TL;DR: An approach to evaluate the profit of any targeting policy using only one single randomized sample is introduced, and a new direct estimation method, called treatment effect projection, is proposed, which performs similar to the recently introduced causal forest of Wager and Athey (2017).

Can data-driven precision marketing promote user ad clicks? Evidence from advertising in WeChat moments
TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper constructed a conceptual model based on cue utilization theory focusing on the effects of consumer perceptions to the personalized online ads on click-through intention, and found that consumers' ad click-out intention increased as a result of employing a higher extent of product involvement, brand familiarity, visual attractiveness and information quality to consumer.
