TL;DR: In this article, the most suitable natural fiber composite for automotive dashboard panel is determined by considering main criteria and sub-criteria in the hierarchy model, and the final decision was carried out by performing different scenarios of the sensitivity analysis in order to study the effect of the different factors on deciding a most suitable material.
Abstract: Material selection is an important process in the product development. To avoid inappropriate decision of materials, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) can be one of the useful tools for determining the most suitable material for automotive dashboard panel. In this project, database of material properties of natural fiber composites has been organized systematically. The material properties of natural fiber material involved are density, Young’s modulus and tensile strength. There are 29 types of natural fiber composites that have been considered in the application of AHP. The most suitable natural fiber composite for automotive dashboard panel is determined by considering main criteria and sub-criteria in the hierarchy model. The final decision was carried out by performing different scenarios of the sensitivity analysis in order to study the effect of the different factors on deciding the most suitable material.

TL;DR: It is found that contrast of size and reduced clutter are instrumental in enhancing driving performance, particularly for the elder population, and that color elements have a negative effect on driving performance for elders, while color elements and fills slightly improve performance.
Abstract: The elder population is rising worldwide; in the US, no longer being able to drive is a significant marker of loss of independence. One of the approaches to helping elders drive more safely is to investigate the use of automotive user interface technology, and specifically, to explore the instrument panel (IP) display design to help attract and manage attention and make information easier to interpret. In this paper, we explore the premise that dashboard displays can be better designed to support elder drivers, their information needs, and their cognitive capabilities. We conducted a study to understand which display design features are critically linked to issues of divided attention and driving performance. We found that contrast of size and reduced clutter are instrumental in enhancing driving performance, particularly for the elder population. Surprisingly, our results showed that color elements have a negative effect on driving performance for elders, while color elements and fills slightly improve performance. We conclude with design implications generated from this work.

TL;DR: In this article, a new natural fiber composite material selection process for automotive dashboard using expert system is presented, which is written in Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) language designed to handle the administration of My Structure Query Language (MySQL) server over the World Wide Web.
Abstract: As a consequence of rapid development in material technology, determination of the right material for a given engineering application was viewed as a crucial decision. Various polymer materials selection methods have been developed to assist designers to determine the right polymer for a given engineering application. This paper presents a new natural fibre composite material selection process for automotive dashboard using expert system. The software tool chosen to assist the development of this expert system is PHPMyAdmin. The software tool was written in Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) language designed to handle the administration of My Structure Query Language (MySQL) server over the World Wide Web. Various polymer composite properties are considered in order to develop the system. The focused properties of composites in this study are the density, Young’s modulus and tensile strength. In order to demonstrate the system implementation, a car dashboard has been selected as a case study. It has been shown that using PHPMyAdmin for polymer composite materials process can assist designers to determine the right polymer composites for a given engineering application.

TL;DR: This research aims at defining a new system and an evaluation protocol to improve, simplify and speed up the usual activities carried out for the ergonomic assessment of the driver’s seat.
Abstract: Virtual Reality techniques are more and more used to validate the design hypotheses during different phases of the product development. In the automotive field, however, there are some types of analyses that are unlikely to be performed by using only a Virtual Prototype (VP) of the vehicle. Therefore, the trend is to develop systems -called seating bucks- that enable engineers to integrate virtual and real objects to provide a tangible interface for the VP of the vehicle. This research aims at defining a new system and an evaluation protocol to improve, simplify and speed up the usual activities carried out for the ergonomic assessment of the driver's seat. In particular, we are interested in evaluating the ergonomics of car's dashboard with its knobs, buttons, display and other control systems. In this paper, we have described the development of this system by providing useful information about the physical issues, related to the seating buck structure, and about the development of the MR environment. The system and the evaluation protocol have been validated by performing several testing sessions with users. The tests confirm the effectiveness of our approach and have enabled us to achieve at interesting considerations.

TL;DR: A new method based on augmented reality offers a new way for visibility and accessibility assessment in the conceptual design of automotive development and shows that this method is simple and useful.
Abstract: Automotive interior ergonomics analysis is an important step for its development validation in the process, which directly affects the product development cycle time and cost. In order to provide a quick and human-in-loop visibility evaluation method for style designer when designing vehicle interior, a new method is proposed based on augmented reality. In this method, firstly virtual car interior model is superimposed to physical mockup accurately, then driving virtual visual cones through tracking eyes' position by tracking tool in real time to carry on visibility assessment. In addition, right hand's motion data is captured by data glove and tracking tool, which is used to drive virtual hand for interaction with virtual interior model, then carrying on accessibility assessment. Based on above-mentioned method the automotive interior ergonomics assessment system is designed and realized, which is verified by two cases of evaluating a certain car model's A-pillar and operating the hand controls locating on the middle dashboard in the different position. The result shows that this method is simple and useful. Therefore, it offers a new way for visibility and accessibility assessment in the conceptual design of automotive development.

Abstract: Article describes advanced high class research simulator of passenger car with complete inside equipment including adjustable driver seat, steering wheel, dashboard, gear selector, accelerator pedal, brake and clutch, parking brake etc. Simulator is based on six axis motion platform and original vehicle cabin adapted from Opel Astra IV body, purchased by Motor Transport Institute. Furthermore, simulator is equipped with dedicated devices which allow conducting research on driver's behaviour which is not possible to conduct in real traffic situations due to the safety issues. Researcher can record parameters related to driver's activities, which could be next analyzed and combined with data received from other external instruments. AS1200-6 can be used also for drivers training in dangerous conditions e.g. learning how to react to the abnormal behaviour of other road users or pedestrians and learning how to drive in different weather conditions. This paper gives an overview of the hardware and software components as well as of the research possibilities that are aimed at making transportation safe and clean. The results of the research are very important especially for the road safety. The simulator enables simulation of dangerous traffic situation in the safe virtual environment.

Abstract: The paper describes a collaborative platform to support the development and the evaluation of cars interior by using a Mixed Prototyping (MP) approach. The platform consists of two different systems: the 3D Haptic Modeler (3DHM) and the Mixed Reality Seating Buck (MRSB). The 3DHM is a workbench that allows us to modify the 3D model of a car dashboard by using a haptic device, while the MRSB is a configurable structure that enables us to simulate different driving seats. The two systems allow the collaboration among designers, engineers and end users in order to get, as final result, a concept design of the product that satisfies both design constraints and final users' preferences. The platform has been evaluated by means of several testing sessions, based on two different scenarios, so as to demonstrate the benefits and the potentials of our approach.
