Abstract: The 1α-hydroxy derivative of vitamin D3 has been chemically synthesized and tested for its biological activity. This analog has comparable biological activity on a weight basis to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 in the stimulation of intestinal calcium transport and bone calcium mobilization in normnal and anephric rats. Because the 1α-hydroxy derivative is synthesized from cholesterol, it is easier and less expensive to prepare than 1α,25-dihydroxy derivative, making it attractive as a drug in the treatment of renal osteodystrophy and hypopara-thyroidism.

Abstract: OF THE DISCLOSURE A liquid crystal material which at least contains a compound having a molecular structure such that the material exhibits a liquid crystal phase, the molecular structure of the compound being selected from one of the following structures: the structure ; a simple ortho-substituted derivative of the structure ; and a derivative of the structure in which a simple bridging group is contained between two of the ortho-positions of the said structure wherein X and Y are different para-substituents of the kind which promote liquid crystal behaviour, the para-substituent X being a group selected from the following list: an alkoxy group having more than one carbon atom; an alkyl group; an acyloxy group; and an alkenyl group; and the para-substituent Y being selected from the following list: a cyano group; a benzene ring substituted in the para-position by a cyano group; and a plurality of directly para-linked benzene rings in which the end ring remote from the substituent X is substituted in the para-position by a cyano group. The material may be the said compound or it may be a multi-component solution or mixture containing it. The liquid crystal material may be nematic, smectic or cholesteric depending on the selection of the substituents X and Y. A device such as a twisted nematic effect device, incorporating the material may be operated at low temperatures. The material does not suffer from significant chemical and/or photochemical decomposition when used in a liquid crystal device.

Abstract: The photochemical transformation of the 1,3-cyclohexadiene chromophore can lead via orbital symmetry allowed pathways either to a bicyclo[2.2.Olhex-2-ene derivative or to a 1,3,5-hexatriene derivative. It was established that the ground state conformation of the starting 1 ,3-cyclohexadiene controls the primary photochemical reaction. The photoproducts composition can be changed by variation of the wavelength or of the temperature. The mechanisms of these processes are discussed. The photochemical transformation of a 1 ,3,5-hexatriene derivative to a bicyclo[3. 1 .O]hex-2-ene has been shown to proceed from an s-trans ,s-cis conformation. The mechanism of the rearrangement has been shown to be an extension of the rearrangement of a 1,3-butadiene to a bicyclo[l .1.O]butane. Abstract: Zerovalent nickel complexes of the types Ni(MZ3)4 and Ni(MZ3)2A; wherein M is P, As or Sb, Z is R or OR, R is an alkyl or aryl radical having up to 18 carbon atoms and may be the same or different, and at least one Z is OR, A is a monoolefinic compound having 2 to 20 carbon atoms, the R radicals of a given MZ3 of Ni(MZ3)2A preferably being so chosen that the ligand has a cone angle of at least 130 DEG ; are prepared by reacting elemental nickel with the MZ3 ligand at a temperature in the range of 0 DEG C.-150 DEG C. in the presence of a halogen containing derivative of MZ3 as a catalyst. A more rapid reaction is realized by carrying out the preparation in an organonitrile solvent.

Abstract: Cografted copolymers of polyolefins, at least one polymerizable acyclic, cyclic or polycyclic ethylenically unsaturated acid or acid anhydride monomer and at least one polymerizable conjugated ethylenically unsaturated ester monomer. These cografted copolymers exhibit superior performance in composites, blends and chemically reacted derivative products when compared with unmodified polyolefins and polyolefins grafted with only one of these monomers.

Abstract: Structure 1 has been elucidated for chaenorhine, an alkaloid isolated from Chaenorhinum organifolium (Scrophulariaceae). The key derivative for the structural elucidation is 13,14,21,22-tetrahydro-21,22-seco-chaenorhine (21). 21 gave upon hydrolysis spermine and 4-hydroxydihydrocinnamic acid characterized as the tetraacetyl derivative 18 and as the dimethyl derivative respectively.

Abstract: A physiologically acceptable insulin derivative has the terminal amino group of the B chain (B1, phenylalanine) protected by an acyl group or other blocking group containing up to seven carbon atoms and the amino group of the A chain (A1, glycine) is either free or protected by means of an acyl or other blocking group containing no more than four carbon atoms and preferably no more than three atoms other than hydrogen. Pharmaceutical preparations may be prepared containing an effective amount of such an insulin derivative together with a physiologically acceptable diluent. An insulin derivative of reduced antigenicity is obtainable from porcine or bovine insulin by reacting the insulin with an acylating agent or other blocking reagent to acylate or otherwise block the amino group of the B1 amino acid and optionally block the A1 and/or B29 amino acid, followed by purification of the derivative by various methods.
