TL;DR: The Inteversonul Communication Inventory as discussed by the authors was developed to identify factors of good and poor interpersonal communication in counseling, teaching and research, and it has been used extensively in counseling and teaching.
Abstract: Patterns, characteristics and styles of interpersonal communication in 316 adult men and women were investigated by use of an Interpersonal Communication Inventoy. Development of the Inventory was based upon previous research in related areas of marital communication, parent-child communication, group therapy and intragroup communication. Item analysis yielded 50 items which discriminated between good and poor communicators. Factors of good and poor communication are identified and discussed. Uses of the Inteversonul Communication Inventory in counseling, teaching and research are proposed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the independent and joint effects of each negotiator's relationship with his constituency and with his adversary in a mixed-motive bargaining setting, where a negotiator's accountability to partner and opponent were manipulated independently but in an analogous manner.
Abstract: With the exception of a few recent studies (Hermann and Kogan, 1968; Thibaut and Gruder, 1969), research on mixed-motive bargaining has neglected intergroup negotiations in favor of focus on interpersonal negotiations. Negotiations in the "real world," however, often involve a spokesman who bargains on behalf of a constituency against an adversary who is also a group representative. In order to understand the process of resolving conflict between groups, it is necessary to investigate the iIndependent and joint effects of each negotiator's relationship with his constituency and with his adversary. To this end, the present experiment varied independently a negotiator's accountability to his partner and to his opponent to determine the effects on his bargaining of the extent to which he felt answerable to each of these parties. Accountability to partner and to opponent were manipulated independently but in an analogous

TL;DR: The authors used concepts from Blau (1962) to generate and test predictions about how individuals make choices to consult, respect, or like their colleagues according to individual attributes and choice criterion.
Abstract: This report uses concepts from Blau (1962) to generate and test predictions about how individuals make choices to consult, respect, or like their colleagues. Choices were analyzed according to individual attributes and choice criterion. Sex has a differentiating effect on choices under the instrumental criterion: male and female respondents both greatly overchoose men for consultation, and men overchoose men for respect. Sex has a segregating effect, however, on sociable choices, each sex preferring like-sex individuals. Age mainly influences the choices for respect and liking. In both cases, mixed segregating and differentiating effects are observed. Departmental affiliation has a segregating effect on choices in all three categories, but differentiation effects also occur because administrative personnel are overchosen for consultation and teachers in the major academic departments are overchosen for respect. Formal organizational status (being a department chairman) produced the predicted differentiating effect on respect. Insofar as membership in a major academic department also can be taken as an indicator of high organizational status, it appears that status has its strongest impact on interpersonal respect.

TL;DR: In this article, a new model of cognitive processes in interpersonal communication is explicated, resulting in a redefinition of the concept of coorientational accuracy, and three experiments are reported in which the accuracy state is treated as an antecedent condition to various types of communication behaviors.
Abstract: A new model of cognitive processes in interpersonal communication is explicated, resulting in a redefinition of the concept of coorientational accuracy. Three experiments are reported in which the accuracy state is treated as an antecedent condition to various types of communication behaviors. The results of these experiments show differences in the communication behavior subsequent to the four accuracy states defined in the proposed model.
