Abstract: This paper presents a hybrid method using soft computing techniques to deal with layout design problem of a satellite module. This problem is a three-dimensional layout optimization problem with behavioral constraints, and is difficult to solve in polynomial time. In this study, we firstly used a Hopfield neural network (HNN) to allocate the given apparatuses and equipment to the bearing plate surfaces in the satellite module. Then, we integrated genetic algorithm/particle swarm optimization (GA/PSO) and quasi-principal component analysis (QPCA) to deal with the further detailed layout optimization. The numerical experimental results showed the feasibility and efficiency of our method for layout optimization of a satellite module.

TL;DR: In this article, a coupled shape and topology optimization (CSTO) technique is proposed to study the layout design of the components and their supporting structures in a finite packing space.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper was to study the layout design of the components and their supporting structures in a finite packing space. A coupled shape and topology optimization (CSTO) technique is proposed. On one hand, by defining the location and orientation of each component as geometric design variables, shape optimization is carried out to find the optimal layout of these components and a finite-circle method (FCM) is used to avoid the overlap between the components. On the other hand, the material configuration of the supporting structures that interconnect components is optimized simultaneously based on topology optimization method. As the FE mesh discretizing the packing space, i.e., design domain, has to be updated itertively to accommodate the layout variation of involved components, topology design variables, i.e., density variables assigned to density points that are distributed regularly in the entire design domain will be introduced in this paper instead of using traditional pseudo-density variables associated with finite elements as in standard topology optimization procedures. These points will thus dominate the pseudo-densities of the surrounding elements. Besides, in the CSTO, the technique of embedded mesh is used to save the computing time of the remeshing procedure, and design sensitivities are calculated w.r.t both geometric variables and density variables. In this paper, several design problems maximizing structural stiffness are considered subject to the material volume constraint. Reasonable designs of components layout and supporting structures are obtained numerically.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed an algorithm that not only identifies the cells but also the sequence of machines in the cells in a simultaneous fashion, but also points to the untapped potential of such an approach to solve the cell formation and layout problem using sequence data.
Abstract: Cell formation problem in CMS design has received the attention of researchers for more than three decades. However, use of sequence data for cell formation has been a least researched area. Sequence data provides valuable information about the flow patterns of various jobs in a manufacturing system. Therefore, it is only natural to expect that use of sequence data must result in not only identifying the part families and machine groups but also the layout (sequence) of the machines within each cell. Unfortunately, such an approach has not been taken in the past while solving CMS design problem using sequence data. In this paper, we fill this gap in the literature by developing an algorithm that not only identifies the cells but also the sequence of machines in the cells in a simultaneous fashion. The numerical computations of the algorithm with the available problems in the literature indicate the usefulness of the algorithm. Further, it also points to the untapped potential of such an approach to solve CMS design and layout problem using sequence data.

TL;DR: The cooling system of an injection mould is very important to the productivity of the injection moulding process and the quality of the moulded part and special techniques that allow C-space computation and storage in three-dimensional or lower dimension are developed.
Abstract: The cooling system of an injection mould is very important to the productivity of the injection moulding process and the quality of the moulded part. Despite the various research efforts that have been directed towards the analysis, optimization, and fabrication of cooling systems, support for the layout design of the cooling system has not been well developed. In the layout design phase, a major concern is the feasibility of building the cooling system inside the mould insert without interfering with the other mould components. This paper reports a configuration space (C-space) method to address this important issue. While a high-dimensional C-space is generally required to deal with a complex system such as a cooling system, the special characteristics of cooling system design are exploited in the present study, and special techniques that allow C-space computation and storage in three-dimensional or lower dimension are developed. This new method is an improvement on the heuristic method developed previously by the authors, because the C-space representation enables an automatic layout design system to conduct a more systematic search among all of the feasible designs. A simple genetic algorithm is implemented and integrated with the C-space representation to automatically generate candidate layout designs. Design examples generated by the genetic algorithm are given to demonstrate the feasibility of the method.

TL;DR: The problem of detecting the reading order relationship between components of a logical structure is investigated, typically denoted as document layout analysis, which involves several steps including preprocessing, page decomposition, classification of segments according to content type and hierarchical organization on the basis of perceptual meaning.
Abstract: Summary. Document image understanding refers to logical and semantic analysis of document images in order to extract information understandable to humans and codify it into machine-readable form. Most of the studies on document image understanding have targeted the specific problem of associating layout components with logical labels, while less attention has been paid to the problem of extracting relationships between logical components, such as cross-references. In this chapter, we investigate the problem of detecting the reading order relationship between components of a logical structure. The domain specific knowledge required for this task is automatically acquired from a set of training examples by applying a machine learning method. The input of the learning method is the description of “chains” of layout components defined by the user. The output is a logical theory which defines two predicates, fi rst to read/ 1a ndsucc in reading/2, useful for consistently reconstructing all chains in the training set. Only spatial information on the page layout is exploited for both single and multiple chain reconstruction. The proposed approach has been evaluated on a set of document images processed by the system WISDOM++. Documents are characterized by two important structures: the layout structure and the logical structure. Both are the results of repeatedly dividing the content of a document into increasingly smaller parts, and are typically represented by means of a tree structure. The difference between them is the criteria adopted for structuring the document content: the layout structure is based on the presentation of the content, while the logical structure is based on the human-perceptible meaning of the content. The extraction of the layout structures from images of scanned paper documents is a complex process, typically denoted as document layout analysis, which involves several steps including preprocessing, page decomposition (or segmentation), classification of segments according to content type (e.g., text, graphics, pictures) and hierarchical organization on the basis of perceptual

TL;DR: Two approaches to the problem of automatically placing document items on pages of some output device work on different input data according to the application, and try to preserve the reading order provided by the input and use all available area on the page.
Abstract: This paper describes two approaches to the problem of automatically placing document items on pages of some output device. Both solutions partition the page into regions where each item is to be placed, but work on different input data according to the application: One approach assumes that previously defined rectangular items are to be placed freely on the page (as in a sales brochure), whereas the second approach places free-form items on pages divided into columns (as in a newspaper). Moreover, both approaches try to preserve the reading order provided by the input and use all available area on the page. The algorithms implementing those approaches and based on recursive page division are presented, as well as test results, possible changes and research directions.

TL;DR: A probabilistic matching algorithm is presented that gives multiple interpretations of input layout with associated probabilities that aims at solving the above mentioned problems for Manhattan layouts.
Abstract: A key limitation of current layout analysis methods is that they rely on many hard-coded assumptions about document layouts and can not adapt to new layouts for which the underlying assumptions are not satisfied. Another major drawback of these approaches is that they do not return confidence scores for their outputs. These problems pose major challenges in large scale digitization efforts where a large number of different layouts need to be handled and manual inspection of the results on each individual page is not feasible. This paper presents a novel statistical approach to layout analysis that aims at solving the above mentioned problems for Manhattan layouts. The presented approach models known page layouts as a structural mixture model. A probabilistic matching algorithm is presented that gives multiple interpretations of input layout with associated probabilities. First experiments on documents from the publicly available MARG dataset achieved below 5%error rate for geometric layout analysis.

Abstract: Techniques for incrementally analyzing layout design data are disclose. With various implementations, a subsequent incremental analysis can be made for only portions of layout design data, using a subset of available analysis criteria, or some combination of both. For example, the analysis can be limited to errors identified in a previous analysis process, to changes in the layout design data made after a previous analysis process, to particular areas specified by a designer, or some combination thereof. Still further, the analysis process may be performed using only a subset of analysis criteria relevant to the portions of the design data being analyzed, a subset of the initial analysis criteria that the design data failed in a previous analysis process, a subset of the initial analysis criteria selected by the designer, or some combination thereof. Further, such an incremental analysis process can be initiated before a previous analysis process has completed.
