Day,Nicholas J. White +40 more
TL;DR: Parenteral artesunate should replace quinine as the treatment of choice for severe falciparum malaria worldwide, according to evidence from Asia, and substantially reduces mortality in African children with severe malaria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emergence and clonal expansion of in vitro artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum kelch13 R561H mutant parasites in Rwanda.
Aline Uwimana,Eric Legrand,Barbara H. Stokes,Jean-Louis Mangala Ndikumana,Marian Warsame,Noella Umulisa,Daniel Ngamije,Tharcisse Munyaneza,Jean-Baptiste Mazarati,Kaendi Munguti,Pascal Campagne,Alexis Criscuolo,Frédéric Ariey,Monique Murindahabi,Pascal Ringwald,David A. Fidock,Aimable Mbituyumuremyi,Didier Menard +17 more
TL;DR: Identification in Rwanda of mutations in Plasmodium falciparum capable of conferring in vitro resistance to artemisinin, an essential medicine for the treatment of malaria, underscore the crucial need for surveillance in Africa to safeguard efficacy of life-saving therapies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of Plasmodium falciparum kelch13 R561H genotypes with delayed parasite clearance in Rwanda: an open-label, single-arm, multicentre, therapeutic efficacy study.

TL;DR: In this paper, the efficacy of artemether-lumefantrine and genetic characterisation of Pfkelch13 alleles and their association with treatment outcomes were investigated in three Rwandan sites: Masaka, Rukara, and Bugarama.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: This large head-to-head comparison of most currently available ACTs in sub-Saharan Africa showed that AL, ASAQ, andDHAPQ had excellent efficacy, up to day 63 post-treatment, supporting the recent recommendation of considering DHAPQ as a valid option for the treatment of uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence and risk factors of malaria among children in southern highland Rwanda
Jean Bosco Gahutu,Christian Steininger,Cyprien Shyirambere,Irene Zeile,Neniling Cwinya-Ay,Ina Danquah,Christoph H Larsen,Teunis A. Eggelte,Aline Uwimana,Corine Karema,Andre Musemakweri,Gundel Harms,Frank P. Mockenhaupt +12 more
TL;DR: Plasmodium falciparum infection in the highlands surrounding Butare, Rwanda, is seen in one out of six children under five years of age, and the abundance of seemingly asymptomatic infections in the community forms a reservoir for transmission in this epidemic-prone area.
