TL;DR: Tracking data from 17 marine predator species in the Southern Ocean is used to identify Areas of Ecological Significance, the protection of which could help to mitigate increasing pressures on Southern Ocean ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The MEOP (Marine Mammals Exploring the Oceans Pole to Pole) project as mentioned in this paper is a consortium of international researchers dedicated to sharing animal-derived data and knowledge about the polar oceans.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: It is found that movement patterns of marine megafauna are mostly independent of their evolutionary histories, differing significantly from patterns for terrestrial animals, highlighting a critical role of preferred habitat in shaping marine vertebrate global movements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Marine ecosystem assessment for the Southern Ocean : Birds and marine mammals in a changing climate
Sophie Bestley,Yan Ropert-Coudert,Susan Bengtson Nash,Cassandra M. Brooks,Cédric Cotté,Meagan Dewar,Meagan Dewar,Ari S. Friedlaender,Jennifer A. Jackson,Sara Labrousse,Andrew D. Lowther,Clive R. Trathan,Mia Wege,Mia Wege,Barbara Wienecke +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors summarized the vast literature on Southern Ocean top predators, focusing on the most recent syntheses and provided an overview on the key current and emerging pressures faced by these animals as a result of both natural and human causes, recognizing the overarching impact that environmental changes driven by climate change have on the ecology of these species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Population structure of adult female Australian sea lions is driven by fine-scale foraging site fidelity
TL;DR: It is proposed that foraging specialization within discrete fine-scale foraging areas and habitats at the individual level limits the dispersive capacity of adult female Australian sea lions which in turn drives population structure.
