Emergence of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease Caused by Nonvaccine Serotypes in the Era of 7-Valent Conjugate Vaccine
Carmen Muñoz-Almagro,Iolanda Jordan,Amadeo Gene,Latorre C,Juan J. Garcia-Garcia,Roman Pallares +5 more
TL;DR: Since the introduction of PCV7 for children, there has been an emergence of IPD caused by virulent clones of non-PCV7 serotypes that has been associated with significant clinical changes and a decrease in antibiotic resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Changes in the incidence of invasive disease due to Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Neisseria meningitidis during the COVID-19 pandemic in 26 countries and territories in the Invasive Respiratory Infection Surveillance Initiative: a prospective analysis of surveillance data.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the incidence of invasive disease due to these pathogens during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic and found that containment policies and public information campaigns likely reduced transmission of S pneumoniae, H influenzae, and N meningitidis, leading to a significant reduction in lifethreatening invasive diseases in many countries worldwide.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of pneumococcal serotypes from culture-negative clinical specimens by novel real-time PCR.
David Tarragó,Asunción Fenoll,David Sanchez-Tatay,L.A. Arroyo,Carmen Muñoz-Almagro,Cristina Esteva,William P. Hausdorff,Julio Casal,Ignacio Obando +8 more
TL;DR: The development and clinical evaluation of real-time PCR-based assays to detect the pneumococcal capsular wzg gene of all serotypes tested are reported here, and 24 of them have been identified in clinical specimens.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pediatric parapneumonic empyema, Spain.
Ignacio Obando,Carmen Muñoz-Almagro,L.A. Arroyo,David Tarragó,David Sanchez-Tatay,David Moreno-Pérez,Sahar S. Dhillon,Cristina Esteva,Susanna Hernández-Bou,Juan J. Garcia-Garcia,William P. Hausdorff,Angela B. Brueggemann +11 more
TL;DR: Increased incidence is principally due to highly invasive nonvaccine serotypes of pneumococci, especially serotype 1.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of childhood pneumococcal conjugate vaccination on invasive disease in older adults of 10 European countries: implications for adult vaccination
Germaine Hanquet,Pavla Krizova,Palle Valentiner-Branth,Shamez N Ladhani,J. Pekka Nuorti,J. Pekka Nuorti,Agnes Lepoutre,Jolita Mereckiene,Mirjam J. Vestrheim,Carmen Muñoz-Almagro,Pello Latasa,Jesús Castilla,Andrew Smith,Birgitta Henriques-Normark,Robert Whittaker,Lucia Pastore Celentano,Camelia Savulescu +30 more
TL;DR: Overall IPD incidence in older adults decreased moderately after five childhood PCV10/13 years in 13 European sites, and decision-making on pneumococcal vaccination for older adults must consider the indirect effects of Childhood PCV programmes.
