Journal ArticleDOI
A field guide to pandemic, epidemic and sporadic clones of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
Stefan Monecke,Geoffrey W. Coombs,Anna C. Shore,David C. Coleman,Patrick Eberechi Akpaka,Michael Borg,Henry Chow,Margaret Ip,Lutz Jatzwauk,Daniel Jonas,Kristina Kadlec,Angela M. Kearns,Frédéric Laurent,Frances G. O'Brien,Julie C. Pearson,Antje Ruppelt,Stefan Schwarz,E. Scicluna,Peter Slickers,Hui-Leen Tan,Stefan Weber,Ralf Ehricht +21 more
TL;DR: A high level of biodiversity among MRSA, especially among strains harbouring SCCmec IV and V elements is shown, and the data indicate a high rate of genetic recombination in MRSA involving SCC elements, bacteriophages or other mobile genetic elements and large-scale chromosomal replacements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antimicrobial activities of silver dressings: an in vitro comparison.
TL;DR: Understanding the characteristics of silver-coated or -impregnated dressings may enable them to be targeted more appropriately according to the specific requirements for use of a particular dressing, as in for prophylaxis in skin grafting or for an infected wound with MRSA.
Journal ArticleDOI
An International Prospective Study of Pneumococcal Bacteremia: Correlation with In Vitro Resistance, Antibiotics Administered, and Clinical Outcome
Victor L. Yu,Christine C. Chiou,Charles Feldman,Åke Örtqvist,Jordi Rello,Arthur J. Morris,Larry M. Baddour,Carlos M. Luna,David R. Snydman,Margaret Ip,Wen Chien Ko,M. Bernadete F. Chedid,Antoine Andremont,Keith P. Klugman,Keith P. Klugman +14 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors performed a prospective, international, observational study of 844 hospitalized patients with blood cultures positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae and evaluated the impact of concordant antibiotic therapy (i.e., receipt of a single antibiotic with in vitro activity against S. pneumoniae) versus discordant therapy (inactive in vitro) on mortality at 14 days.
Journal ArticleDOI
Maternal Colonization With Group B Streptococcus and Serotype Distribution Worldwide: Systematic Review and Meta-analyses.
Jennifer Hall,Nadine Hack Adams,Linda Bartlett,Anna C. Seale,Anna C. Seale,Theresa Lamagni,Fiorella Bianchi-Jassir,Joy E Lawn,Carol J Baker,Clare L. Cutland,Paul T. Heath,Margaret Ip,Kirsty Le Doare,Kirsty Le Doare,Shabir A. Madhi,Shabir A. Madhi,Craig E. Rubens,Samir K. Saha,Stephanie J. Schrag,Ajoke Sobanjo-ter Meulen,Johan Vekemans,Michael G. Gravett +21 more
TL;DR: GBS colonizes pregnant women worldwide, but prevalence and serotype distribution vary, even after adjusting for laboratory methods, which may help to explain lower GBS disease incidence in regions such as Asia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Frequent emergence and limited geographic dispersal of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
Ulrich Nübel,Philippe Roumagnac,Mirjam Feldkamp,Jae-Hoon Song,Kwan Soo Ko,Yhu Chering Huang,Geoffrey W. Coombs,Margaret Ip,Henrik Westh,Henrik Westh,Robert Skov,Marc Struelens,Richard V. Goering,Birgit Strommenger,Annette Weller,Wolfgang Witte,Mark Achtman +16 more
TL;DR: Mapping the number of independent imports of the staphylococcal cassette chromosome methicillin-resistance island shows that import has occurred on at least 23 occasions within this single sequence type and that the progeny of such recombinant strains usually are distributed locally rather than globally.
