TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the incidence of invasive disease due to these pathogens during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic and found that containment policies and public information campaigns likely reduced transmission of S pneumoniae, H influenzae, and N meningitidis, leading to a significant reduction in lifethreatening invasive diseases in many countries worldwide.
Journal ArticleDOI
External Quality Assurance for Laboratory Identification and Capsular Typing of Streptococcus pneumoniae
Hans Christian Slotved,Carmen L. Sheppard,Trine Dalby,Arie van der Ende,Norman K. Fry,Eva Morfeldt,Outi Nyholm,Assaf Rokney,Merav Ron,Lotta Siira,Kevin J. Scott,Andrew Smith,Louise Thom,Maija Toropainen,Didrik F. Vestrheim +14 more
TL;DR: The results show that comparable serotyping data can be obtained in different laboratories and the EQA is helpful when new technologies are introduced, and reveal limitations of both genotypic and phenotypic methods.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fatal Infection in a Wild Sandbar Shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus), Caused by Streptococcus agalactiae, Type Ia-ST7.
Danny Morick,Nadav Davidovich,Eyal Bigal,Ezra Rosenbluth,Arieli Bouznach,Assaf Rokney,Merav Ron,Natascha Wosnick,Dan Tchernov,Aviad Scheinin +9 more
TL;DR: This is the first description of a fatal streptococcosis in sandbar sharks, and available sequences publicly accessible databases and phylogenetic analysis suggest that the S. agalactiae isolated in this case is closely related to fish and human isolates.
Journal ArticleDOI
Screening asymptomatic households for Streptococcus pyogenes pharyngeal carriage as a part of in-hospital investigation of puerperal sepsis.
Regev Cohen,Regev Cohen,Shoshana Cohen,Marina Afraimov,Talya Finn,Talya Finn,Frida Babushkin,Keren Geller,Svetlana Paikin,Irena Yoffe,Lea Valinsky,Merav Ron,Assaf Rokney +12 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that screening close family members for asymptomatic GAS carriage should be performed early as a part of infection prevention measures, as doing so would have significant utility in saving time and resources related to a full epidemiological inquiry.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Nationwide Outbreak of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease in Israel Caused by Streptococcus Pneumoniae Serotype 2.
Ron Dagan,Shalom Ben-Shimol,Rachel Benisty,Gili Regev-Yochay,Stephanie W. Lo,Stephen D. Bentley,Stephen D. Bentley,Stephen D. Bentley,Paulina A. Hawkins,Lesley McGee,Merav Ron,Noga Givon-Lavi,Lea Valinsky,Assaf Rokney +13 more
TL;DR: This is the first widespread Sp2 outbreak since PCV13 introduction worldwide, caused by the emerging ST-13578 clone, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms-dense regions support a hypothesis that the ST- 13578 outbreak clone evolved from ST-1504 by recombination.
