Titanium Dioxide Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Properties, Modifications, and Applications

The richness of optical and electronic properties of graphene attracts enormous interest. Graphene has high mobility and optical transparency, in addition to flexibility, robustness and environmental stability. So far, the main focus has been on fundamental physics and electronic devices. However, we believe its true potential lies in photonics and optoelectronics, where the combination of its unique optical and electronic properties can be fully exploited, even in the absence of a bandgap, and the linear dispersion of the Dirac electrons enables ultrawideband tunability. The rise of graphene in photonics and optoelectronics is shown by several recent results, ranging from solar cells and light-emitting devices to touch screens, photodetectors and ultrafast lasers. Here we review the state-of-the-art in this emerging field.

Silver nanoparticles as antimicrobial agent: a case study on E. coli as a model for Gram-negative bacteria

Neural spikes in the brain form stochastic sequences, i.e., belong to the class of pulse noises. This stochasticity is a counterintuitive feature because extracting information - such as the commonly supposed neural information of mean spike frequency - requires long times for reasonably low error probability. The mystery could be solved by noise-based logic, wherein randomness has an important function and allows large speed enhancements for special-purpose tasks, and the same mechanism is at work for the brain logic version of this concept.

Optical Materials Technology for Energy Efficiency and Solar Energy Conversion VII

Thin films and nanostructured coatings are becoming of increasing importance for eco-efficient construction. This chapter discusses the underlying reasons why this is so and then introduces the major technologies. They are subdivided into those requiring vacuum or plasmas – with focus on evaporation and sputtering – and a range of other techniques. Nanoparticle-based coatings are discussed separately, with an emphasis on advanced gas deposition, deposition of carbon-based structures, and microbial fabrication. Large-scale deposition is treated in particular detail, and some views are given on future developments.

Thin Films and Nanostructured Coatings for Eco-Efficient Buildings

Nanocomposites consisting of noble metal nanoparticles in a transparent matrix exhibit plasmonic absorption in the visible wavelength range, and conducting oxide nanoparticles display a localized plasma absorption in the near infrared The optical properties of nanocomposites are commonly modelled by effective medium theories, which describe the effective dielectric function of the composite using as input the dielectric functions of the constituents and their respective volume fractions Plasmonic effects can be exploited in the design of energy-efficient windows in order to obtain improved performance Electrochromic coatings that switch in the near infrared make use of the modulation of the plasma absorption of oxide nanoparticles due to charge density modulation induced by an external voltage Plasmonic thermochromic switching in the near infrared has the potential to be significantly larger than in the case of a thin film Very thin noble metal films are an interesting alternative to conducting oxides as transparent contacts to electrochromic devices However, in this latter case plasmonic effects are to be avoided rather than exploited
