Genome-wide association study identifies a single major locus contributing to survival into old age; the APOE locus revisited.
Joris Deelen,Marian Beekman,Hae-Won Uh,Quinta Helmer,Maris Kuningas,Lene Christiansen,Lene Christiansen,Dennis Kremer,Ruud van der Breggen,H. Eka D. Suchiman,Nico Lakenberg,Erik B. van den Akker,Erik B. van den Akker,Willemijn M. Passtoors,Henning Tiemeier,Diana van Heemst,Anton J. N. de Craen,Fernando Rivadeneira,Eco J. C. de Geus,Markus Perola,Frans van der Ouderaa,David A. Gunn,Dorret I. Boomsma,André G. Uitterlinden,André G. Uitterlinden,Kaare Christensen,Cornelia M. van Duijn,Cornelia M. van Duijn,Bastiaan T. Heijmans,Jeanine J. Houwing-Duistermaat,Rudi G. J. Westendorp,P. Eline Slagboom +31 more
TL;DR: The major locus determining familial longevity up to high age as detected by GWAS was marked by rs2075650, which tags the deleterious effects of the ApoE ε4 allele, and no other major longevity locus was found.
Journal ArticleDOI
The number of p16INK4a positive cells in human skin reflects biological age
Mariette E. C. Waaijer,William E. Parish,Barbara H. Strongitharm,Diana van Heemst,P.E. Slagboom,Anton J. M. de Craen,John M. Sedivy,Rudi G. J. Westendorp,David A. Gunn,Andrea B. Maier +9 more
TL;DR: It is observed that a younger biological age associates with lower levels of p16INK4a positive cells in human skin, and this data indicates that middle‐aged individuals with the propensity for longevity are more likely to have fewer senescent cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Why Some Women Look Young for Their Age
David A. Gunn,Helle Rexbye,Christopher E.M. Griffiths,Peter Murray,Amelia Fereday,Sharon D. Catt,Cyrena C. Tomlin,Barbara H. Strongitharm,Dave I. Perrett,Michael Catt,Andrew E. Mayes,Andrew G. Messenger,Martin R. Green,Frans van der Ouderaa,James W. Vaupel,Kaare Christensen +15 more
TL;DR: It is indicated that women who look young for their age have large lips, avoid sun-exposure and possess genetic factors that protect against the development of gray hair and skin wrinkles.
Journal ArticleDOI
Perceived age as clinically useful biomarker of ageing: cohort study
Kaare Christensen,Mikael Thinggaard,Matt McGue,Helle Rexbye,Jacob v. B. Hjelmborg,Abraham Aviv,David A. Gunn,Frans van der Ouderaa,Frans van der Ouderaa,James W. Vaupel +9 more
TL;DR: Perceived age—which is widely used by clinicians as a general indication of a patient’s health—is a robust biomarker of ageing that predicts survival among those aged ≥70 and correlates with important functional and molecular ageing phenotypes.
Journal Article
Perceived age as clinically useful biomarker of ageing
Kaare Christensen,Mikael Thinggaard,Matt McGue,Helle Rexbye,Jacob v. B. Hjelmborg,Abraham Aviv,David A. Gunn,Frans van der Ouderaa,James W. Vaupel +8 more
TL;DR: For instance, this article found that the likelihood that the older looking twin of the pair died first increased with increasing discordance in perceived age within the twin pair, that is, the biggerthe difference in perceived ages within the pair, the more likelythat the older-looking twin died first.
