Journal ArticleDOI
The Impact of Fusarium Mycotoxins on Human and Animal Host Susceptibility to Infectious Diseases
Gunther Antonissen,An Martel,Frank Pasmans,Richard Ducatelle,Elin Verbrugghe,Virginie Vandenbroucke,Shaoji Li,Freddy Haesebrouck,Filip Van Immerseel,Siska Croubels +9 more
TL;DR: This review summarizes the current state of knowledge about the impact of Fusarium mycotoxin exposure on human and animal host susceptibility to infectious diseases and indicates possible exacerbation of colibacillosis and salmonellosis in humans, as well.
Journal ArticleDOI
The complex interplay between stress and bacterial infections in animals
Elin Verbrugghe,Filip Boyen,Wim Gaastra,Leonie Bekhuis,Bregje Leyman,Alexander Van Parys,Freddy Haesebrouck,Frank Pasmans +7 more
TL;DR: An overview of how and when stress influences the outcome of bacterial infections in animals is provided.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Mycotoxin Deoxynivalenol Potentiates Intestinal Inflammation by Salmonella Typhimurium in Porcine Ileal Loops
Virginie Vandenbroucke,Siska Croubels,An Martel,Elin Verbrugghe,Joline Goossens,Kim Van Deun,Filip Boyen,Arthur Thompson,Neil Shearer,Patrick De Backer,Freddy Haesebrouck,Frank Pasmans +11 more
TL;DR: Data imply that the intake of low and relevant concentrations of DON renders the intestinal epithelium more susceptible to Salmonella Typhimurium with a subsequent potentiation of the inflammatory response in the gut.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stress induced Salmonella Typhimurium recrudescence in pigs coincides with cortisol induced increased intracellular proliferation in macrophages.
Elin Verbrugghe,Filip Boyen,Alexander Van Parys,Kim Van Deun,Siska Croubels,Arthur Thompson,Neil Shearer,Bregje Leyman,Freddy Haesebrouck,Frank Pasmans +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that a 24 h feed withdrawal increases the intestinal Salmonella Typhimurium load in pigs, which is correlated with increased serum cortisol levels, which implies that the enhanced intracellular proliferation of the bacterium is probably caused by an indirect effect through the cell.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genomic innovations linked to infection strategies across emerging pathogenic chytrid fungi
Rhys A. Farrer,An Martel,Elin Verbrugghe,Amr Abouelleil,Richard Ducatelle,Joyce E. Longcore,Timothy Y. James,Frank Pasmans,Matthew C. Fisher,Christina A. Cuomo +9 more
TL;DR: The results show that, despite commonalities that promote infection, specific gene-family radiations contribute to distinct infection strategies, and underscores the urgent need to halt the advance of pathogenic chytrids and prevent incipient loss of biodiversity.
