Journal ArticleDOI
Desmosterol suppresses macrophage inflammasome activation and protects against vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis.
Xinbo Zhang,Jeffrey G McDonald,Jeffrey G McDonald,Binod Aryal,Alberto Canfrán-Duque,Emily L. Goldberg,Emily L. Goldberg,Elisa Araldi,Wen Ding,Yuhua Fan,Bonne M Thompson,Bonne M Thompson,Abhishek Singh,Qian Li,George Tellides,Jose Ordovas-Montanes,Jose Ordovas-Montanes,Rolando García Milian,Vishwa Deep Dixit,Elina Ikonen,Elina Ikonen,Yajaira Suárez,Carlos Fernández-Hernando +22 more
TL;DR: This article showed that desmosterol, the most abundant cholesterol biosynthetic intermediate in human coronary artery lesions, plays an essential role during atherogenesis, serving as a key molecule integrating cholesterol homeostasis and immune responses in macrophages.
Journal ArticleDOI
Murine cathepsin D deficiency is associated with dysmyelination/myelin disruption and accumulation of cholesteryl esters in the brain
Aino-Liisa Mutka,Aleksi Haapanen,Reijo Käkelä,Maria Lindfors,Ann K. Wright,Teija Inkinen,Martin Hermansson,Anne Rokka,Garry L. Corthals,Matti Jauhiainen,Thomas H. Gillingwater,Elina Ikonen,Jaana Tyynelä +12 more
TL;DR: The authors showed that CTSD deficiency leads to pronounced myelin changes in the murine brain: myelin-related proteolipid protein and myelin basic protein were both markedly reduced at postnatal day 24, and the amount of lipids characteristically high in myelin were significantly lowered compared with controls.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cellular sterol trafficking and metabolism: spotlight on structure.
Elina Ikonen,Maurice Jansen +1 more
TL;DR: Several aspects of sterol trafficking and homeostasis are conserved between eukaryotes, and novel, unanticipated findings in this area have recently been made, particularly from genetic screens in yeast.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of BODIPY-Cholesterol (TF-Chol) for Visualizing Lysosomal Cholesterol Accumulation
Maarit Hölttä-Vuori,Maarit Hölttä-Vuori,Erdinc Sezgin,Christian Eggeling,Elina Ikonen,Elina Ikonen +5 more
TL;DR: It is highlighted the fact that the method of lipid delivery and the analysis of time‐point both affect the membrane distribution and labeling pattern of TF‐Chol, similarly as with radiolabeled cholesterol.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plant sterols, cholesterol precursors and oxysterols: Minute concentrations—Major physiological effects
TL;DR: This review article recapitulate the latest insights into the properties and physiological activities of these non-cholesterol sterols, as well as their importance in disease processes and potential as diagnostic biomarkers.
