Journal ArticleDOI

Stress, the stress system and the role of glucocorticoids.

TL;DR: The central and peripheral components of thestress system are described, a comprehensive overview of the stress response is provided, and the role of glucocorticoids in a broad spectrum of stress-related diseases is discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Association of LRRK2 exonic variants with susceptibility to Parkinson's disease: a case-control study.

Owen A. Ross, +70 more
- 01 Oct 2011 -
TL;DR: The results for LRRK2 show that several rare and common genetic variants in the same gene can have independent effects on disease risk, and are important in the cause and pathogenesis of PD in a greater proportion of patients with this disease than previously believed.
Journal ArticleDOI

The S18Y polymorphic variant of UCH-L1 confers an antioxidant function to neuronal cells.

TL;DR: It is found that S18Y, but not WT, UCH-L1 confers a specific antioxidant protective function when expressed at physiological levels in human neuroblastoma cells and primary cortical neurons, and this function may underlie the protective effects of this variant in certain PD populations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Population-specific frequencies for LRRK2 susceptibility variants in the Genetic Epidemiology of Parkinson's Disease (GEO-PD) Consortium.

Michael G. Heckman, +62 more
- 01 Oct 2013 -
TL;DR: Leucine‐rich repeat kinase 2 variation related to disease susceptibility displays many features that reflect the nature of complex, late‐onset sporadic disorders like Parkinson's disease.
Journal ArticleDOI

The protective effect of LRRK2 p.R1398H on risk of Parkinson's disease is independent of MAPT and SNCA variants

Michael G. Heckman, +64 more
TL;DR: The best validated susceptibility variants for Parkinson's disease are located in the α-synuclein (SNCA) and microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) genes as mentioned in this paper.
