Ianna +52 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported the discovery of transient optical emission in the error box of the gamma-ray burst GRB980425, the light curve of which was very different from that of previous optical afterglows associated with Gamma-ray bursts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Discovery of the peculiar supernova 1998bw in the error box of GRB980425
Titus Galama,P. M. Vreeswijk,J. van Paradijs,Chryssa Kouveliotou,T. Augusteijn,Olivier Hainaut,Ferdinando Patat,H. Boehnhardt,J. Brewer,V. Doublier,J.-F. Gonzalez,C. Peterson,C. G. Tinney,B. J. Boyle,Russell D. Cannon,R. A. Stathakis,Michael C. Begam,Philip A. Ianna +44 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors reported the discovery of an optical transient, in the BeppoSAX Wide Field Camera error box of GRB980425, which occurred within about a day of the gamma-ray burst.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transient optical emission from the error box of the gamma-ray burst of 28 February 1997
J vanParadijs,J vanParadijs,Paul J. Groot,Titus Galama,Chryssa Kouveliotou,Chryssa Kouveliotou,Richard G. Strom,J. Telting,Rgm Rutten,Gerald J. Fishman,Charles A. Meegan,Max Pettini,Nial R. Frontera,Guido Zavattini,Luciano Nicastro,E. Palazzi,K. Bennet,Lorraine Hanlon,Arvind Parmar +30 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported the detection of a transient and fading optical source in the error box associated with the burst GRB970228, less than 21 hours after the burst, suggesting that the burst occurred in that galaxy and thus that γ-ray bursts in general lie at cosmological distance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Discovery of the X-Ray Afterglow of the Gamma-Ray Burst of February 28 1997
E. Costa,F. Frontera,John Heise,M. Feroci,J. J. M. in 't Zand,Fabrizio Fiore,Maria Nerina Cinti,D. Dal Fiume,Luciano Nicastro,Mauro Orlandini,E. Palazzi,M. Rapisarda,Guido Zavattini,R. Jager,A. N. TL;DR: The first afterglow of a gamma-ray burst was detected and quickly positioned by the Beppo-SAX satellite on 1997 February 28 (GRB970228) as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
A `Hypernova' model for SN 1998bw associated with gamma-ray burst of 25 April 1998
Koichi Iwamoto,Paolo A. Mazzali,K. Nomoto,H. Umeda,T. Nakamura,Ferdinando Patat,I. J. Danziger,T. R. Young,T. Suzuki,Toshikazu Shigeyama,T. Augusteijn,V. Doublier,H. Boehnhardt,J. TL;DR: The discovery of the peculiar supernova (SN) 1998bw and its possible association with the gamma-ray burst (GRB) 980425$ 1,2,3} provides new clues to the understanding of the explosion mechanism of very massive stars and to the origin of some classes of gamma ray bursts.
