Li-ion battery materials: present and future

Structural symmetry is a simple way to quantify the anisotropic properties of materials toward unique device applications including anisotropic transportation and polarization-sensitive photodetection. The enhancement of anisotropy can be achieved by artificial symmetry-reduction design. A core-shell SbI3 /Sb2 O3 nanowire, a heterostructure bonded by van der Waals forces, is introduced as an example of enhancing the performance of polarization-sensitive photodetectors via symmetry reduction. The structural, vibrational, and optical anisotropies of such core-shell nanostructures are systematically investigated. It is found that the anisotropic absorbance of a core-shell nanowire is obviously higher than that of two single compounds from both theoretical and experimental investigations. Anisotropic photocurrents of the polarization-sensitive photodetectors based on these core-shell SbI3 /Sb2 O3 van der Waals nanowires are measured ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to visible light (360-532 nm). Compared with other van der Waals 1D materials, low anisotropy ratio (Imax /Imin ) is measured based on SbI3 but a device based on this core-shell nanowire possesses a relatively high anisotropy ratio of ≈3.14 under 450 nm polarized light. This work shows that the low-symmetrical core-shell van der Waals heterostructure has large potential to be applied in wide range polarization-sensitive photodetectors.

Symmetry-Reduction Enhanced Polarization-Sensitive Photodetection in Core-Shell SbI 3 /Sb 2 O 3 van der Waals Heterostructure

Single-crystalline trumpetlike Zn3P2 nanostructures composed of hollow cones supported by nanowires have been prepared via a simple thermochemical method, which utilized ZnS and GaP as the source materials. The as-synthesized nanostructures are composed of single-crystalline Zn3P2 nanowires with diameters of ∼50nm and large diameter hollow cones with diameters increasing from 50nm at the bottom to 600nm at the top. Photoluminescence study of the trumpetlike Zn3P2 nanostructures shows a broad emission centered at ∼585nm at room temperature.

The development of electronic skin is the key to the realization of artificial intelligence that immediate contacts with humans, as well as biomedical applications. To mimic the tactile sensing properties of natural skin, large ultrathin arrays of pixel high-performance pressure sensors on a flexible and stretchable substrate are required. Here, we demonstrate ultrathin, flexible multimodal sensing capability of e-skin sensor based on polyaniline hollow nanospheres composite films (PANI-HNSCF). Hollow structure endows the thin films with structure-derived elasticity and a low effective elastic modulus of 0.213 MPa. The effective amplification and transformation of various external stimuli to independent electrical signals enables the precise and continuous sensing of pressure and temperature with a high pressure sensitivity of 31.6 kPa−1 and an accurate temperature resolution of 0.08 °C−1. Importantly, the single sensing unit can be easily integrated sensor arrays with excellent sensing performance. Our work provided the technological verify between structure of materials and properties of device and make hollow materials possess promising application in e-skin and health-monitoring elements.
