Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of thiazolidinedione treatment on progression of subclinical atherosclerosis in premenopausal women at high risk for type 2 diabetes.
Anny H. Xiang,Ruth Peters,Siri L. Kjos,Cesar Ochoa,Aura Marroquin,Jose Goico,Sylvia Tan,Chengwei Wang,Stanley P. Azen,Chao-ran Liu,Ci-hua Liu,Howard N. Hodis,Thomas A. Buchanan +12 more
TL;DR: The effects of treatment with a thiazolidinedione drug on rates of progression of carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and some putative determinants of CIMT in young women at high risk for type 2 diabetes were tested and Troglitazone reduced the progression of subclinical Atherosclerosis via a mechanism that involved unmeasured mediators of atherosclerosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Potential cardiovascular disease risk markers among HIV-infected women initiating antiretroviral treatment
Robert C. Kaplan,Alan L. Landay,Howard N. Hodis,Stephen J. Gange,Philip J. Norris,Mary Young,Kathryn Anastos,Phyllis C. Tien,Phyllis C. Tien,Xiaonan Xue,Jason Lazar,Christina M. Parrinello,Lorie Benning,Russell P. Tracy +13 more
TL;DR: Increased inflammation and hemostasis are associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in recently treated women and have potential implications for long-term risk of cardiovascular disease in HIV-infected patients, even with effective therapy.
Journal Article
Triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and progression of atherosclerosis
Howard N. Hodis,Wendy J. Mack +1 more
TL;DR: This association not only suggests that certain risk factors may act early and others late in the athersclerotic process, but that triglyceride-rich lipoproteins are associated with progression of the lesions (mild/moderate lesions) which are predominantly responsible for clinical coronary events.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coronary heart disease and menopause management: the swinging pendulum of HRT.
TL;DR: A major difference in the effects of hormones between younger and older women has emerged but this important finding has been minimized, and the final findings for all outcomes closely resemble those from observational cohorts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Postmenopausal hormone therapy in clinical perspective.
Howard N. Hodis,Wendy J. Mack +1 more
TL;DR: The literature indicates similar benefit of postmenopausal hormone therapy, in women who initiate hormone therapy in close proximity to menopause, to other medications used for the primary prevention of coronory heart disease in women.
