Journal ArticleDOI

Double-core-hole spectroscopy for chemical analysis with an intense X-ray femtosecond laser

TL;DR: The observation of DCH states, which exhibit a unique signature, and agreement with theory proves the feasibility of double-core-hole spectroscopy, and exploit the ultrashort pulse duration of the free-electron laser to eject two core electrons on a time scale comparable to that of Auger decay and demonstrate possible future X-ray control of physical inner-shell processes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Surface relaxation in liquid water and methanol studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

TL;DR: In this article, extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy of liquid microjets has been employed to observe the intermolecular O-O distance undergo a 5.9% expansion at the liquid water interface, in contrast to liquid methanol for which there is a 4.6% surface contraction.
Journal ArticleDOI

Lipidic phase membrane protein serial femtosecond crystallography

TL;DR: Interpretable diffraction data is recorded from micrometer-sized lipidic sponge phase crystals of the Blastochloris viridis photosynthetic reaction center delivered into an X-FEL beam using a sponge phase micro-jet.
