Journal ArticleDOI
HFE Mutations in Caucasian Participants of the Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Screening Study with Serum Ferritin Level <1000 μg/L
Paul C. Adams,Christine E. McLaren,Mark Speechley,Gordon D. McLaren,Gordon D. McLaren,James C. Barton,John H. Eckfeldt +6 more
TL;DR: Iron loading HFE mutations are unlikely to be the most common cause of an elevated serum ferritin level in patients with mild hyperferritinemia, and patients should be advised that there are many causes of an Elevated serum ferrisin level including iron overload.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cross-Disciplinary Biomarkers Research: Lessons Learned by the CKD Biomarkers Consortium
Chi-yuan Hsu,Shawn Ballard,Daniel Batlle,Joseph V. Bonventre,Erwin P. Bottinger,Harold I. Feldman,Jon B. Klein,Josef Coresh,John H. Eckfeldt,Lesley A. Inker,Paul L. Kimmel,John W. Kusek,Kathleen D. Waikar,Krista M. Whitehead,Robert G. Nelson +25 more
TL;DR: Investigations involving biomarker discovery and validation are greatly enhanced by establishing and following explicit quality control metrics, by carefully considering the conditions under which specimens are collected, handled, and stored, and by conducting pilot and feasibility studies when there are concerns about the condition of the specimens or the accuracy or reproducibility of the assays.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence of iron deficiency in 62,685 women of seven race/ethnicity groups: The HEIRS Study.
James C. Barton,Howard H. Wiener,Ronald T. Acton,Paul C. Adams,John H. Eckfeldt,Victor R. Gordeuk,Emily L. Harris,Christine E. McLaren,Helen Harrison,Gordon D. McLaren,David M. Reboussin +10 more
TL;DR: Iron deficiency prevalence was greater in Hispanic and black than white and Asian women ages 25–54 y and prevalence did not differ significantly in women with or without ID, regardless of race/ethnicity, age subgroup, or pregnancy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Kinetic enzymic assay for D(-)-lactate, with use of a centrifugal analyzer.
TL;DR: This rapid, accurate, and precise assay should be helpful in evaluating patients with "short-bowel syndrome" who display confusion, lethargy, ataxia, or other central nervous-system disturbances that may be ascribable to D(-)-lactic acidosis.
